Media Browser Theater Preview 2: Home Screen and Item Details

Aphid

After much delay, here is the 2nd preview of the work being done behind the scenes on Media Browser Theater. In this post, we'll be showing the new home screen and item detail page.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YW5oR6KX5LU&feature=youtu.be

Home

The new home page now contains all home page sections on one continous smooth-scrolling page. You can scroll straight from one section on to the next, or use the shortcuts at the top to skip to a section, or use home/end to navigate to the begining or end of the screen.

Item Details

The new item details page differs quite significantly from the current release. Like the home page, all content can be found on a single continuous page.

The new item details page is designed to surface the content and actions that you are most likely to take, and present them to you without requiring that you dive through multiple menus to get there.

I like this. It must looks really nice in a tablet like surface pro. It has that windows 8 feel. I like it. Good job.

This is great.  I'm glad to see progress being made and thanks for keeping us in the loop on what's to come!

I agree with breezytm. It probably looks amazing on both a big screen and a tablet. Here's hoping there's some touch support, MBT always seemed to be tailor made for touch, but doesn't support swipe and such. Still works tho.

And I am agreeing with you sir lol. I didn't think about big screen computers with touch screen. That would look amazing in one of them them and the swipe touch too.

Looks very nice, one thing I would like to see though and maybe this will be at the mercy of a Skinner if one comes on board is some of the awesome artwork mb3 scrapes. Like discart, logos, ect... incorporated. I also hope we can still use video backdrops from radeons plugin like we can now, i love those.

Other then the fresh gui, the only thing missing for me is a great music section (with artist info and stuff like that, maybe a shuffle/instant mix option), and a simple photo section and it will be a complete htpc client for me.

This looks beautiful! I'm excited to get my hands on it. I really like the addition of the "play all" button. I noticed an Anime heading, does that mean that we'll now have an Anime category to keep them out of the TV Shows section?

The home screen shows a section for each folder that you have on the server, just the same as the web client does. You can configure MB to group folders together, or to have them show up separately.

Can you turn off that continuous scroll on the home screen and require selection of the tab on the top? I suspect the continuous scroll will break under mouse control and make it difficult to actually use the home screen. Though it is pretty obvious that the primary input is considered to be the remote with its slow action, that shouldn't be the only input. I suspect many will use this client on desktop computers without touchscreens or remotes but with keyboards and mice.

Also not a fan of the big Play and Folder buttons. They break the continuity of the design and introduce superfluous whitespace. Though that should be something that could be rectified if theming ever comes to MBT. Though again, I suspect these are concessions to the remote control.

Looks awesome! Will this be available in the Classic version that is accessed within WMC? Or available from within WMC at all?

Will the chapter images be available or automatically downloaded? I saw them as blank in the preview.

Thanks.

Oh, I didn't know this. I'll need to investigate this and figure it out.

You can't turn it off, but the mouse works fine. The scroll wheel will scroll the page horizontally.

Also not a fan of the big Play and Folder buttons. They break the continuity of the design and introduce superfluous whitespace.

There will also be playlist and "now playing" related buttons added, which will take up much of the available space. If anything, it will be too cramped.

I suggest you try out the SQUARE theme, it looks very similar..

Works great, I like the fact this means nearly all of my clips will now play without a server-heavy realtime transcode, but I've noticed some clips are still transcoded. I can't find any common factors to work out why this happens:

  • MKV 1080p H264 + DTS 5.1 = transcode
  • MKV 1080p H264 + AC3 5.1 = transcode
  • MKV 1080p H264 + AAC 2.0 = no transcode
  • MKV 720p H264 + AC3 5.1 = no transcode

Does anyone know what might be causing this? I have an Intel J1900 CPU so until ffmpeg finally gets QuickSync (GPU encoding) support it's not powerful enough to give a good experience.

UPDATE:

This was due to some of the files having a high bitrate. There is a setting in the Theatre app which determines the maximum streaming bandwidth. Since I am on a LAN I have upped this to 20mbps - problem solved, no more transcoding.

Looks like a major upgrade to MBT in most areas, however, I find the item details screen looks very cluttered, and not as "classy" as the current details screen in MBT. the reason I like the current version of the mbt details screen is that it devotes all of the screen real estate to the section you are currently looking at (ie. The overview), and doesn't bombard you with too much information.

Also, I hope there's a way to get a list view with overview for television episodes. As I've found it to be the cleanest look for episode selection ever since I was using MB2.x

I like where this version of MBT is going, but at the same time it looks like it could eventually begin to stray from what made MBT so appealing to me in the first place (ie. Simplicity and it's clean, uncluttered look).

I see that the focus seems to be on making it look like a Win8 Metro app, or something that would be found on a tablet. Maybe I'm in the minority in feeling that it would be nice to be able to choose which "metro-esque" features you would like enabled? I don't mind the new home screen, but as I stated before, I really can't see myself enjoying the new overview screen. Just way too much "stuff" on the screen at once.

I'm not trying to bash the new version of MBT, it's definitely a step forward, technology-wise. And it certainly looks like a more "polished" program. But from the preview it looks like it may be trying to do too much at once in some areas.

Just my opinion though guys! Keep up the good work, it's great to see some attention being given to MBT! It's my favourite MB3 app by far, and I just want to see that it gets the attention it deserves :)

Not really fair of me to comment without reading all the posts, but...... looks to me like it's directly taken out of MBC themes, which after using for an hour or so in testing this week, I decided to persevere with solving my issue in MBT, because it's look and flow beats MBC hands down!

It is too busy, and by having too much on screen you totally lose the visual quality.  The simple, but visually striking Neo theme is why I struggle to move from MB2, and although Metro is supposedly modelled off Neo, it's disappointing in my opinion.  That said I can see how touch devices are perhaps going to be the main influence in upcoming designs.

MBT looking and performing as it does right now has given me a reason to stick with MB3, after much frustration..... so I agree with 'pmac' - Keep up the good work, it's great to see some attention being given to MBT! It's my favourite MB3 app by far too
