New Server 3.0.5309 Beta Released

Luke

8386 views

This is largely another infrastructure release. Here's the highlights:

  • Xbmc metadata support out of the box (plugin is now obsolete)
  • New video player layout in the web client
  • Improved seeking while transcoding for the web client & roku, coming soon to other apps
  • New mobile tap-hold menus
  • Improved log page
  • Subtitle download scheduled task
  • Latest item groupings
  • Season overview fetching from Tmdb
  • Episode image fetching from Tmdb
  • Chapter images now part of regular refresh

Now with Built-In Xbmc Metadata Support

Xbmc metadata support is now included out of the box and requires no configuration. It just works. For new users coming from Xbmc, we can read your nfo's and get you up and running very quickly.

New Video Player Design

The new video player in the web client is much prettier and will make use of your logo images. The mobile version is also much simpler now and takes advantage of the browser's native controls.

New Mobile Tap Hold Menus

The new mobile tap hold menus will give you quick access to all of your favorite functions.

Better Seeking While Transcoding

You will notice this in the mobile web client, and in the Roku beta. Other clients will soon update to take advantage of this.

New Log Page

If you need to post a log for debugging purposes, now you can access any of your log files from within the web client, under Help -> Logs.

New List View

Many users prefer a plain list view while navigating, and we've listened. It's available on several screens.

Subtitle Download Scheduled Task

Subtitles are normally downloaded when new videos or added or refreshed manually. But now the scheduled task can help fill in the gaps as well.

Latest Item Groupings

The web client will now group latest items together by series or album.

Season Overview Fetching from Tmdb

Episode Images from Tmdb

Tvdb remains the default tv image fetcher, but Tmdb has been added as an option due to the wonderful quality of their episode images (sometimes 1080p and beyond).

Chapter Images

These are now generated when new content is added, in addition to the scheduled task. We want to remove the need to run scheduled tasks manually and leave them to what they're supposed to be - scheduled tasks.

Security Overhaul

Api security has been revamped, and going forward, applications will require either your password or your permission via an api key in order to communicate with Media Browser. We are in discussion with both Sickbeard and Nzbdrone to receive notifications from them when new content is added.

You'll be able to generate api keys for both of these applications which you will then enter into their configuration. If they don't have a key, they will not have access to your Media Browser Server. You can be sure we're doing everything we can to secure your data. Note: existing Media Browser apps will be given a grace period to migrate to the new authentication system.

Very nice!

Question on Tmdb fetching. In order to take advantage for existing media, do I need to delete current metadata and images?

We don't do any unwanted replacement of metadata, so, it will not go and refresh existing content. But there are new refresh options in the editor to replace existing images, that might help with that.

That new API key sounds like an awesome addition just BEGGING to be rolled into MBC! I was going to try giving MBC another shot when I was testing MBT, but very quickly gave up on it after it asked me for my password every time I opened it. That API key would be a quick and easy solution to that.

The new player looks real nice too. Thanks!

I think you're misunderstanding the purpose of the api key. It is a security feature and will not affect the way you login or out of Media Browser applications.

Currently the Media Browser api is publicly accessible to anyone who tries to talk to it. Now they have to have a key. Most users are not going to care about this feature but it will please the security nerds.

This is a great update! Many little fixes here and there that fix little niggling issues that you won't notice because those issues are gone!

cant open MBC any more after this update. Just gets stuck logging in. The first new interface update made logging in very slow (from 1 sec to 1-25 sec) but now it never logs in :(

The scheduled automatic downloading of subtitles is great!

There has always been a setting in the MBC configurator to pick the account you want it to auto-login with and supply the password so that it doesn't prompt you every time. You only have to supply a password if you change to a different user during the session. I have my living room and bedroom auto-login with the adults account and the playroom logs in with the kids account. Only if I switch the living room to kids do I get prompted.

If they don't have a key, they will not have access to your Media Browser Server.

After upgrading, I can still see the API pages (like Library/MediaFolders) and the API docs from a remote computer, in a browser with nobody logged in.

There were 2 existing API keys for the Dashboard — created automatically by MB, I guess. Do I need to delete these to restrict access? Is this part of the grace period?

Yes it is part of the grace period because otherwise their connectivity will be broken. Best thing to do is check with the developer(s) of your apps because the sooner they switch over, the sooner the switch can be flipped.

Update was sucessful. however, what happened to the metadata edit option? I was a pen link icon next to the MEDIABROWSER logo near the upper left hand corner of the server window in the web broweser.

Cool update.

Is there anyway to make the video window smaller in the browser for lower quality video? When I have to set it at 360p because of signal it's still a large window and looks rough enlarged. I used to just not fulscreen it before the update. Fulscreen or not doesn't make a lot of difference now.

I can no longer access media browser using the iMediaShare app i've been using lately on my iOS 6 device thanks to the API key feature I assume. It made doing the dishes very boring.

I hope this API feature isn't going to lock out all none supported apps.

Maybe I'm jumping to conclusions and there's another reason it's not showing up

Auch, I wish i didn't update. The XBMC compatibility and metadata editor are not working great in this new version.

Is there any way to revert?

Windows System Restore. That's what I do. I have never been able to go back to a previous version any other way. So I create a Restore Point before I update anything just in case I need to revert back to a state where everything was working.

The integrated XBMC metadata plugin works great for movies, but it doesn't write any .nfos for TV shows. I have checked "Xbmc nfo" in TV Series, TV Episodes and TV seasons under metadata savers in the settings menu.

Any ideas?

/edit: Also tried manual refresh in metadata editor.
