Windows 8.1 App 2.0 Released

The wait is over, the new version of Media Browser for Windows 8.1 is here.

http://apps.microsoft.com/windows/en-us/app/media-browser/ad55a2f0-9897-47bd-8944-bed3aefd5d06

Even though the app has a lot of cosmetic improvements such as rotating backdrops, more artwork used etc etc, the biggest changes are under the hood. Playback is vastly improved and performance is even better.

Here's a list of the biggest changes

Playback

  • Support for HLS streams, providing a more reliable transcoding solution with less playback errors.
  • Support for external subtitles without transcoding
  • New player look and feel

Features

  • Channels are now supported. Just enable some channels on the server and enjoy them on your windows 8.1 device.
  • Playlists are now supported, just go into the music hub and you'll find them.
  • Multiple backdrops. The app now use all the backdrops that you have for your items and fades nicely between them
  • Fewer buttons, the resume button is gone and replaced with a flyout. Just hit play, if the playable item can resume the options will be shown
  • The change user option has moved up to the top left corner of the main screen

Languages

  • Two more languages have been added, Spanish and Kazakh

It seems it's not available in Europe yet... Last version is from the 15th of July...

Looks great - such a shame MBT remains so far behind in comparison and this modern app is constrained by mandatory transcoding which kills the quality for any serious HTPC use.

actually with the changes this app doesn't do as much transcoding as  you might think.

1. The language is changed by altering the preferred language in windows (Control Panel\Clock, Language and Region\Language) Just add the lanuage you want and make sure it's att the top of the list

2. No, sorting is not there yet. I work as fast as I can though and I'll get there sooner or later. ;)

I can't seem to get the app to connect to the locally running media browser, it correctly determined IP and port number automatically but it always says that the host name could not be found.

The in-app log doesn't say anything usefull other then the time I started and the fact that I tried to look at the log:

2|2014-08-21T20:22:23.0658793+00:00|DEBUG|4|RtLogger|Application Started: 21.08.2014 20:22:23
10|2014-08-21T20:22:35.6444525+00:00|DEBUG|3|LoggingFlyout|Navigating to: MediaBrowser.Views.LogviewerPage Parameter: Log - 20140821.log

Anything I should now that would prevent the connection?

DAMN IT... the one time you don't look where you usually look and it bites you in the arse...

Thanks for the link, and as a suggestion: add an info for this in the connection wizard ;)
