Invalid Application

Out of the blue every time I try to launch MBC I get "invalid application:  unable to launch media browser 3"

I've tried:

Uninstalling/Reinstalling MBC multiple times

Removed all plugins

Deleted all files for MBC in both program data and app data folders

Reinstalling actually somehow still reinstalled chocolate (after uninstalling) as well as other plugins so deleted that

Still can't figure out what's wrong.  MBC Log below.  Help!

I have the same issue and its getting more frequent. I found its a files in my library that MBC doesn't like. I think its to do with the first library location shown on the EHS as I get the error as soon as I open MBC after the load screen.

If I press the right arrow just as it enters the EHS I can avoid the error. I also avoid the error if I remove all the files in the library then put some back bit by bit (you need to re scan the library each time) eventually I find a file that causes it (normally a downloaded TV show) although recently I have not found the files causing it so I suspect its a picture (cover etc) that MBC downloads . I can remove a bunch of folders and the error goes away but it soon returns.

Here you Go Ebr , server Log and Mbc Log, Its doing it only on 1 library which is not my Main so i can enter MBC no problem until i scroll on that one that is doing the error then i get the invalid application error.

I'm running Chocolate theme but if i go back to the default theme i do not get the error i can browser that library no problem

Tried unstalling chocolate & re-installing no change.

I'd like to know what objet is causing the error so i can fix it (or just delete it) but i dont see anything apparent in the logs

Okay, not sure if you are the same person under a different ID but those logs aren't throwing the same error as the first one.

Whenever you get an "Invalid Application" from WMC we'll need the Windows event log error for it (that is the only place it is reported).  See the How to report a problem post for how to get that.

I don't know who the previous person posting was...must have chosen a wrong topic?  Anyway sorry for the delayed response....life got a bit hectic.  I don't have the server log from 10/10 anymore but I have the one from today where it did the same thing.  If you need me to resubmit the MBC log as well let me know, but I expect it to show the same types of info.

I am unable to get ride of this error now with out pressing the left arrow when MB starts to move the selected EHS folder before it tries to load the covers of the first folder. Once it loads on the second (for any other folder) folder I can go back to the first folder without error.

I have now found the above is only when using the Chocolate Theme. I have now tried other themes which all worked until I used Xenon and turn on something like RDL (or simular from the config button on the EHS. as soon as I clicked it it crashed (invalid application)  and now I cant use Xenon or Diamond even after an uninstall reinstall as it crashes before getting to the EHS. (anyone know how to reset the theme options to default ? (I assume this will fix it as it will turn off the RDL thing I turn on)

Hi there,

I'm author of Xenon theme and was wondering what is "RDL" that you refer too.

Do you also have square theme installed?  I spoke with @@Soultaker and we both should have put code in to prevent this crash.

We can get you sorted. Need to make sure that all your plugins/themes are at the latest version and that you are running latest versions of Server and MBC.

Can you please post versions up here.

Thanks

any news on why we are getting this error?  I removed all plugins from MBC and was able to open the application but as soon as I move it gives the error again.  Sorry replaying from wife.

It is tough to tell because this is a completely generic error from WMC.  You will get this message when anything goes wrong.  So, when it happens, to have a clue as to what the error actually was, I need the error from the Windows event log as posted by a couple of folks in here.  Those two instances actually are completely different issues and yours may be as well.

However, if you are having this issue on a specific library entry in Chocolate, then please try replacing your Chocolate.dll with this one. It is in the programdata\Mediabrowser-Classic\plug-ins folder.

Thanks, this has fixed my issue for now and I hope for good :) I also deleted all the theme related files in the folder specified which resolved my second issue although there is still an issue in the Xenon theme when selecting some options it crashes MB.

Thanks again

Mike

Hi Mike, please start a new thread in Plugins and Themes sub forum and we can work thru the Xenon issues.  I need to ween out any bugs with Xenon and your help would be appreciated.

Please also see my signature and click the link to supply me with the required information when posting.

Help!

https://docs.google.com/document/d/10wouKRdHxcB3uiIWYp1ug75Jvjl617BCXxhqQAPNE9k/edit?usp=sharing

MBS Version: 3.0.5395.0

MBC Version: 3.0.224.0

Theme: Chocolate

I have recently experienced the same issue using the Chocolate theme and have narrowed it down to an issue with the EHS screen and images it is trying to show for Recently Added Items.

I have one library entry that was consistently causing MBC to throw the INVALID APPLICATION error when trying to enter from the EHS screen. It was not my default (first) library, so MBC would start up, but any attempt to enter the library would cause a crash.  If I was quick enough and could hit the OK button on remote, I could enter this library with no issue.  But, when I backed back out to the EHS screen, then it would crash again.  I turned off the EHS screen and found that I could enter all libraries with no issues and no crashes.  My library with an issue was a TV series collection that had some items with Season folders (local Season folder images) and some where they were all collected in a Series folder, but no Season folder (cached Season image, if available).  This setup was working just fine for quite awhile with Chocolate theme and EHS screen, until a few weeks ago. I am just guessing, but it seems like the EHS screen and the images it is trying to display for RECENTLY ADDED ITEMS is causing an issue. I have done my best to clean up my one library collection with Season folders and it seems to have eliminated most of these crashes.

And did you try the Chocolate dll I posted above for this specific issue?

As I mentioned above and as is outlined in the how to report a problem post, if you get an "Invalid Application" error, the log we need is in the Windows Event log.

That error you posted is curious but will not cause MBC to crash.

And did you try the Chocolate dll I posted above for this specific issue?

ebr,

Just downloaded it and installed. But, as I stated, the issue seems to have cleared up for me after re-arranging some of the Season folders in the library I had an issue with.  But, I will continue to test this updated DLL and report back if there are any issues.

Many thanks for all of your hard work.

Yeah, the reason it was crashing is due to a library structure it is not expecting so if you cleared up the source of the issue it won't matter.  But the new dll should prevent this bad data from bringing the program down in the future.

ebr,

Good to know, because I know it can come up again. The only reason it is not an issue now is because no new items have been entered in the library recently under the old structure. I still have some in the library under the old structure, but they are not trying to be displayed in the Recently Added List. Nice to know there is a more resilient dll now.

Many thanks.

Here is the event log from Windows for my problem...

Figured it out, updated hard drives and forgot to switch over imagesbyname.
