Trailers Not Playing in MBC

Last server update seems to have broken trailers for me (Version 3.0.5395.0).  Trailers simply fail to play in MBC but will play in the web interface.  I tried updating MBC to latest version (3.0.220.0) but still no dice.  I was unable to upload the server log as it was over 20 mb.

It is trying to play them in an external player which is going to be very tricky for streamed content.  I'll have to see how best to deal with that.

Ebr,

I have external player (MPC-HC) in MBC configurator set to play mp4 files (recorded tv with commercials removed).  Once I removed this file type from the external player, all trailers play fine.  So with the new version I have to chose between playing trailers or my tv content encoded in mp4?  What changed in trailers that it now responds to settings for external players?

I said I would figure out a way to deal with it :).

No problem.  I did not mean to imply that this was intended behavior as it did not happen in earlier versions.  I simply stated that as of now this is what happens. I was just curious if there was a change in how trailers are played in MBC that may be responsible for the bug.

Thanks again

  • Solution

There was a change in how trailers are delivered by the server and MBC has now adjusted to all of those changes and improved streaming in general.

Try the new beta (222) with your trailers.

Nobody said you have to make that choice. we might just not use the external player for internet content because we have no way of predicting whether they'll work or not.

I am quite disappointed that the trailers no longer play in my defined external player. It was fine with 221, but now I have no choice with 222?

Why take away our choice to use an external player for trailers? Instead, you could let us check a box if we want to use the internal player for streaming, otherwise keep things the way they were.

I need to keep the system working for the masses and there is no way to ensure that an external player can handle playing a stream url so the best way for most of the people here is to make sure it works.  There are too many check boxes in MBC already.

If you download them, they should play in your external.

There are too many checkboxes? Seriously, that is your reason for taking away functionality that was already there?

No, my reason for adjusting the functionality was because trailers are now streamed from channels in most cases and many external players cannot play a stream url and I want the system to work, the first time, for 90%+ of the users.

My reason for not adding this as an option is there are too many options already.  It would be confusing to most users and make the configuration just that much more complex.

No door is never closed. If we see a lot of people want to play trailers in external players then obviously we'll adjust. But Ebr is right, having it work is important. I know it sounds trivial that the option should just be there, but we're the ones who have to answer the questions about why it doesn't work in external player abc, even when it's something we have no control over.

I never want to get into the game of telling you how to use the system, rather the system should adapt to what you guys want. But try to take into consideration that these trailers are two-channel stereo aac, with conservative video bitrates designed for smooth streaming. If you want the external player for consistency purposes then i understand where you're coming from. But if you think an external player is going to enhance them somehow then just from a technical standpoint I don't see how that's going to happen.

I guess you mean no door is ever permanently sealed. This door was certainly closed. I would say slammed in my face. A functionality that I was using was removed simply because "there are too many checkboxes".

Why would I think that an external player would "enhance" the streaming quality? What would possibly be the mechanism for the enhancement?

I set up MBC to use an external player because I prefer the external player. It was working fine a few weeks ago. Now I have no option but to use the annoying internal player for trailers (or the suggestion that I should just download the trailers myself...LOL. It seems MediaBrowser developers don't want me using it for trailers).

There is an option in the channel settings to have them download automatically.  That is what I was referring to by "download" them.
