Collection - Force Add External IDs

I have a folder named Harry Potter Collection with all of the Harry Potter movies in it.   Themoviedb.org recognizes this collection (https://www.themoviedb.org/collection/1241-harry-potter-collection) but Mediabrowser does not.

I've renamed the folder using the name on theMovideDB.org, changed the name in the Metadata Manager similarly, and refreshed but still Mediabrowser doesn't fetch the data.

Is this a bug or am I missing something?  Either way I'm also stuck because I can't manually enter an External ID.  There's no "Identify" button and no fields to enter data into under "External IDs".  Being able to manually enter an External ID is useful when Mediabrowser just can't identify your folder/file.  Please advise.

Thank you!  I'm a long time Mediabrowser user (long before MB3) and love all the changes.  Keep up the great work!!

Yeah, the old way was with the [boxset] tag but I also recommend removing the collection folder altogether and using the collections feature of the server.

You don't really need to make collections with folders anymore. I would recommend moving each of the movies to their own folder, and then using the web-interface to bind them together into a collection.

If you want to include these in the library the only way to do it is adding the [boxset] tag at the end of the name of the collection folder, which then contains your movie folders.

Harry Potter Collection [boxset]\

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (2001)\

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (2001).mp4

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002)\

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002).mp4

Conversely, you can let the autoboxset plugin make these movie collections automatically. This will not migrate the boxsets into your library, like using [boxset] in the folders name does. With the autoboxset plugin its server specific where boxset data is kept.

I still don't think it's a great idea to put [boxset], better to have them separate and bind them together in the library. But as long as you get it to work any method should do.

Thanks for the input guys.  I think I'm going to need to use the [boxset] label.  Mediabrowser powers our installation of WMC.  When we log into WMC to view movies we select Movies and browse to what we want to see.  The more movies that show the bigger the hassle it is to go through them.  So I want to group as many movie series together as I can (e.g. Harry Potter, Star Wars, Toy Story, Ice Age, Godfather, etc.) into boxsets/collections.

The Collections feature does an awesome job of just knowing what movies make up a boxset . . .it's impressive!  But I don't want to browse through the Collections menu, I want to stay in the Movie menu and find that like movies are grouped together.

On another note, is there currently a way to ensure that the Identify button is always present and/or External IDs are always available to be manually entered?

Thanks,

MJ

hey ebr, is there info somewhere on migrating from the old [boxset] folder method to the new server features for collections?

You still should not use the boxset tag.  Do what we suggested and then turn this option on and you will have the best of both worlds:

No, but there's not much to it.  Just flatten out your structure (eliminating the boxset folders) and then either install the auto box set plug-in or go create the box sets you want using the web client.

so we should move the individual movie folders into the main movie root folder, delete the colelction folders we had with boxset tags, and then just turn on that client side checkmark...is there nothing elsle to be done server side or elsewhere?

You have to either install the auto boxset plug-in or create the collections with the web interface.

does the web client also create something in the file structure like it says it does on the plugin?

The plug-in uses the exact same method of creating them as the server.

awesome, ty ebr for answering...is there a howto or guide somewhere on using web client for that manually?

I'm not sure.  Probably in a blog post somewhere but it is pretty easy.  Go into your list of movies in the web client and turn on the "selection" feature (hit the check mark at the top).  Select the movies you want and hit "Add to Collection".

Do you have "Group movies into collections" check in User Preferences on the server?

I do, yes.  I decided to delete every collection that I saw in the web gui and start from scratch and guess what???  The system is working as ebr said it would.  I don't recall when I made those collections but I think I did some manually and some with Auto Boxset.  Either way I don't know why things weren't working like they're supposed to but I know what I have to do to get them to work now :)

Thanks,

MJ

PS, I STILL want to be able to see the "Identify" button all the time (not conditionally) and be able to enter external IDs.

ebr,

I enabled the option you highlighted in the screenshot above and confirmed in the web client that I have several collections already put together.  But when I log into MBClassic in WMC and go into "Movies" all my movies are shown individually, they are not collapsed into a collection/boxset.   If I add [boxset] to the folder structure then when I browse the "Movies" menu I see a listing for the the boxset rather than the individual movies.

I expected the same results when I applied the changes you recommended above but it looks as though I still have to enter the "Collections" menu to see my boxsets.   What am I doing wrong?

It's great on this thread the auto collection creation seems to be working (don't use it myself).  It was mentioned in this thread you can manually with the web interface, tie movies to a collection.  Does this work or just the Auto BoxSet plugin works?  Per my thread (at the bottom):

http://mediabrowser.tv/community/index.php?/topic/11711-display-correct-play-order/?p=140719

when I go to the Movies area in the web interface, hit the plus button, type in the name of the Collection, and then add movies to it, then click Refresh, the contents of the manually created collection go away.  Just left with the name of the collection.  In the logs it looks like it goes out to TMDB and can't find a match for the manual collection so wipes it out.  I did not check the checkbox to go on the internet to update the content when I created the Collection.  I've since removed the Auto BoxSet plugin to test, however without it the movies still go away from the manual collection.  Anyone else see this or try this?

Just to confirm, this is happening to you without Auto Box Sets installed, right?

Yes sir.  I have zero plugins installed right now and have rebooted the system to make sure the changes took effect.  Still clears out the content.  Glad to visualize or provide anything you need to show this behavior.

Okay, Thanks.

@@Luke - this is probably related to the problems I encountered with the backup/restore of collections.  Something in the collections refreshing logic is wiping out the contents of the collections for some reason.

This has been asked a few times in this thread but hasnt been answered, i too would like this option for the few movies that are not recognized so i can quickly go to imdb, search for the movie and then put the number from the address bar in external ids section.
