Erik 120
Just a heads up for uses windows server 2012.... I upgraded my hardware and while doing a clean install of the OS I discovered a lot of drivers were not installed. So I went about downloading them and still they wouldn't install. Found out after a little googling that the new Intel 8 series boards have an internal marker that indicates its a consumer piece of hardware (not server grade) and will not recognize the devices. Trying to force Server OSs into Server Hardware I guess. For me it was the LAN, Chipset and audio. There are a few hacks out there to make some devices work, but mixed results from what I read. Tharnax 49
I've run into this with Windows Home Server 2011 as well. It's really frustrating when you pick up a nice new motherboard/processor/ram to upgrade your server and then attempt to install WHS 2011 on in, a "consumer" product. Then you can't install network drivers because these drivers can only be installed on with a non-Windows Server OS. Really!!!??? I think that's why I hear a lot of people moving to Windows 8 server, it has some limitation but has storage spaces so for the most part works for individuals home server us. Personally I like the auto back-up that comes with WHS and have had to use it plenty of times.
Erik 120
Yes, very aggravating! to say the least. After several days of attempts...I found that the latest drivers for my motherboard from ASUS all work EXCEPT for the LAN chip. That seems to be the biggest stumbling block, so I went and bought a new PCIE Ethernet card instead and now its all up and running on server 2012 R2. gthrift 57
Anyone tried this? http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1772066 I've been looking at upgrading my HP N40L to a lower power 35w i3 build. I was thinking it would be quieter, cooler, and more powerful but this is a roadblock I wasn't expecting. edit: I used the method here and worked without issue on an Asus H97i-Plus motherboard with intel 1218-v and Windows Server 2012 Essentials R2. Erik 120
I did read about it, but the sites that showed how for the 1218-V that I was dealing with said the results were not %100 for some. So I went the safe route for now as its the family server.

See intel nic section - http://assassinhtpcblog.com/server-whs-2011/#guide005%C2%A0 or check the comments here - http://nearlydeaf.com/?p=1145. I'm interested to see if this works, as the board I want also has the 1218-v. edit: I used the method here and worked without issue on an Asus H97i-Plus motherboard with intel 1218-v and Windows Server 2012 Essentials R2. Erik 120
I'll read that closer, thanks. But Intel has made it so it doesn't even come up as unsigned...just says no driver available even when I point it to where I know it is...have to modify the driver details like in your first post I believe. I followed the instructions I linked above and it worked without issue.
