LAV Splitter - no internal subs

Hello,

I am desperately trying to make MBC/WMC work for me when it comes to subtitles.

I've tried this great tutorial quite a numbers of times, methodically adjusting each settings in attempt to understand why and how this works. Alas, the result is either inconsistent or just plain a-no-go, for me.

So, in desperation, I abandoned all hope for interactive subtitle/audio switching capability with MBC/WMC and decided to be diligent in managing my media with a single subtitle.. I am going to stick with LAV filters:

  • LAV Splitter to choose internal "forced subtitles"
  • xy-VSFilter to choose external "forced subtitles"

I've followed this guide and this awesome guide and suggestions on MB's forums.

Issue: Internal subtitles won't show up at all for me! xy-VSFilter shows up fine for external subs. I even tried uninstalling xy-VSFilter to make sure I am only dealing with Internals.

Here are LAV Splitter settings:

This is what I see for LAV Splitter during a video's playback:

Win7DFilterTweaker 5.9 (I use "USE MERIT" for video and "LAV Audio" for audio as per above guide)

and GraphStudionext 0.6.1.265 details on the file:

Can anyone shed some light as to what the heck I am doing wrong for internal subs not to display?

Note 1 :For what it's worth, VLC player shows internal subs just fine and so does XMBC (recently acquainted)

Note 2 : I did try changing LAV splitter to defaults. Theoretically, this should display any available subtitle, but it just won't

MBS:  3.0.5395.0

MBC: 3.0.224.0 (Windows 7 x64)

LAV Filter: 0.63 32&64

Thanks!

LAV splitter appears to work correctly (it creates sub title streams), however, LAV video does not have a build in subtitle renderer. Install xy-vsfilter (NOT xysubfilter which is available on the same site) from here http://code.google.com/p/xy-vsfilter/ .  If you have 64 bit windows, you need to install both the 32 and 64 bit so it works in media center. If it is all working, you should see in little green arrow in the system tray.

FFDshow has no problem showing internal subs and has the subtitle renderer build in, but since it is now discontinued (I think it is still the best & most powerful codec out there!)), many people are switching or have switched to LAV. LAV works well, but due to the lack of a internal subtitle renderer (and any other post processing for that matter), many people find sub title rendering in WMC or WMP or several other direct show players problematic.

I agree, but imo, if your using old software (WMC) you should use what works best whether it's discontinued or not. I also tried LAV only on WMC when i tried MBC but given the lack of control via remote i moved on

Are you saying that with just LAV filters, there won't be subtitles since LAV video cannot render subs into the video stream?

Sorry, I am illiterate in this area. If so, that explains a lot (for me)

I am embarrassed to say that I have not tried it yet. Somehow, I was so determined to make Media Control work that I totally omitted the alternative! I will give it a go today and post my results.

This works! :) it's simple and effective: subs on/off keyboard key (which I have to bind to my harmony remote button)

Questions:

  • have you ever figured out whether its possible to cycle through subs? (I know you've mentioned it is not possible in your guide)
  • is there a way to have subtitles toggled off by default with FFDSHOW? I couldnt find anything relevant.

Thank you!

Yes, that is what I am saying.. LAV requires an external sub title renderer. Some players come with a sub title renderer, WMC or WMP require an external renderer.

Good to see you got it working with MCE-Remote and FFDShow.

I do note that MCE remote can be a little quirky when using it with a actual remote (keyboard is ok). Also if you setup LAV Splitter correctly, it should give you only the sub titles you need, so you really should not have to switch sub title streams (unless your subs are not flagged correctly that is).

On an other note; I still think that FFDshow is the best and most powerfull codec package out there and it is really a pitty these guys gave up on the development.

No i never did since i gave up on MBC no long after i had wrote the guide. Using XBMB3C is way less headache and snappier then MBC(for me anyways) and supports for liveTV (WMCServer) is good enough for my needs.

True but some (like me) do require it cuz sometime i have french subs and english sub. When the kid is screaming over the tv, we sometime start subs to be able to continue following and then we might want to change again to french because my wife will have a hard time understanding the dialog or the meaning of the sentence in english. Its rare, but does happen on occasion.
