Virus/Malware/Spyware Tools

I'm starting tom suspect that I may have some kind of suspicious software on my media centre... Normally I am very, very careful about security but I am not infallible and nor is the software.

Currently I'm not picking up any issues... but I am still noticing some strange behaviour and fear that at the very least I may have some sort of browser hijacking going on...

I currently run win 7 Pro 64, all up to date as of last Tuesday, I run daily scans with antivirus and only use Chrome browser at the moment... which is kept upto date too. I also run a few extensions to block ads, scripts and java... currently that's Adblock, Adblock Plus (work fine alongside each other), Privacy Badger, Ghostery and Javascript Popup blocker.

Lately I've noticed a lot of pop unders getting through... well, they're actually opening new tabs rather than windows and chrome isn't stopping it. But I've also noticed the occasional redirect... I am unable to replicate any of these on demand. and they're only happening occasionally... So occasionally that I hadn't really noticed and those that open new tabs do so without noticing at first... I'm ad blocking everything as I go, and I've blocked more than a few sites at the router level, but that doesn't work as I also use a VPN and so the router doesn't know to block because it's encrypted.

It's only happening on certain sites... which I won't disclose here... but they are NOT... I repeat... NOT Porn sites.  :P

So could I have a list of your favourite apps and tools for tackling these things please. From anti virus to malware and spyware scanners and tools and extensions for browsers.

Of the issues I am having, it's only on one system and not the others... both of which are coming up clean also. But I'd rather be safe and check them all at the same time.

Try running it in safe mode. I love combo fix from bleeping computers also run it in safe mode.

Yeah I've tried all of that... in fact 5 different programs have failed to find a single piece of malware or any trace of anything else untoward.

I think that perhaps Chrome itself was the issue... it seems that it's simply failing to stop pop ups/unders at all at the moment and there's no way to tell when it does.

I installed firefox on the system and just added adblock plus with the popup addition, and on the same sites it's reporting that it's blocking attempts to open popups... Not seen a single pop up/under with firefox at all... Could be the last straw that makes me switch back to it again. I only switched to chrome because I used G+ a lot and video hangouts ran better in chrome than firefox.. But I don't use it as much these days.

I had this problem yesterday and it was the myRadioPlayer adware.  MS Security Essentials didn't find it but malwarebytes did.

Try Bleepingcomputer.com - get rkill run it first, then adware cleaner and let it reboot

I haven't tried the rkill before, but the adware cleaner is really good at picking up stuff.

Adwcleaner. It is a much quicker scan than malwarebytes but it can also be more invasive and not as "conservative" as malwarebytes, so check the results carefully before you clean that what it detects is truly unwanted. I use adwcleaner in the rare cases malwarebytes misses something.

@@ebr I've found nothing untoward at all, I have MSE installed, I've tried lavasoft, malwarebytes and a couple of others and nothing showed up at all.

But since switching back to firefox and using the adblock plus plugin with the addons to it to prevent redirects and popups... I've not been troubled. Instead I get a warning that it tried to redirect or open a popup but was blocked.

It seems that Chrome is no longer able to block things that it should... and I came across this article.

http://www.theguardian.com/technology/askjack/2014/mar/13/how-can-i-remove-redirection-malware-from-my-pc

Needless to say.. I shall be running a few more checks and scans to be sure... But for now, Chrome will not be used.

This.

Actually, I use the following in this order when there is a suspected infection.

ADWcleaner (one pass, reboot, repeat)

Junkware Removal Tool

Malwarebytes.

CCleaner to remove crap and temp files left over.

Does a great job in most cases.

The only time I had a similar problem, I was using this utorrent chrome plugin. Turns out it was redirecting because it had a malware in it (the plugin used to be fine until a few months ago). I had adblock at the time and it was still happening.

Since switching to firefox and full scans showing nothing... not had a single issue.

I am however having to contend with that fecking flash plugin crashing on me constantly... Updated it over the weekend but still it crashes at the drop of a hat, often freezing up the browser for ages... warning box comes up, tell it to stop the plugin and it continues on... 15 secs later the warning box comes up again... it's crashed... NO SHIT SHERLOCK... have to exit and restart the browser to resolve it which is a pain in the arse.

At this point... I'm so pissed of that I'm considering using IE.
