scottfree1 0
It would be great it some of you linux guru's could put a rock solid linux media server setup together (ideally with all your favorite metadata, vid conversion etc tools, also having plex and xbmc pre-installed would be a bonus) And then make a livecd and/or virtualbox version of your setup. Myself I've gone round and round with the various linux flavors and have found it to be pretty big pain to deal with, Which flavor? Arch Linux, CentOS, Debian, Docker, Fedora, Open Media Vault, Ubuntu, now add a new repositorie, sorry 404 uffta.. Installing mono, find out your ubuntu 12.10 install only supports mono2 and is total waste of time, you needed ubuntu 14/mono3 to run mb.. Chose the server install ubuntu 14, install the mate desktop, break the server 14 install. So as I said it would be a huge help if some just add water and go versions were out there.. http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/How_to_create_and_use_a_Live_CD http://www.virtualbox.org/manual/ch01.html#ovf Edited November 19, 2014 by scottfree1
thefirstofthe300 291
Not a bad idea. Maybe a project for someone in the community who wants to do it?
scottfree1 0
If you want a head-start here are pre-built boxes of pretty much any distro you would want, for someone who knows the right trail through the forest it should be pretty simple, unlike myself, who spends all day wandering the forest bashing my head into random trees.. http://virtualboximages.com/ Edited November 20, 2014 by scottfree1
scottfree1 0
Well I'm gonna take what I've learned through my head bashing, and give it a shot. Ubuntu studio 14.10 seems logical starting point? 41 minutes of download time to suggest an alternative.. http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ubuntustudio/releases/14.10/release/
thefirstofthe300 291
I would say that Ubuntu 14.10 would be a good starting point. In a year and a half when the next LTS release hits stable I would suggest using that but until then the latest Ubuntu with the latest mono sounds good. If you want a head-start here are pre-built boxes of pretty much any distro you would want, for someone who knows the right trail through the forest it should be pretty simple, unlike myself, who spends all day wandering the forest bashing my head into random trees.. http://virtualboximages.com/ I know NOTHING about rolling a distro myself so I really don't have any idea where to begin. And I am the same as you: everything that I have learned has been by bashing my head on every tree in the forest in an attempt to find the path. hurricanehrndz 149
Your best bet is using which ever distro you like and then using docker, all the apps are preconfigured and ready to go. If your looking for server distro, I would say use unRAID. I run virtual machines and all my apps are docker containers.
scottfree1 0
Ok the winner was Mint 17 Amdx64, It's a rar'd virtualbox"ova" the disk is a 10gb vhd (used vhd cause relatively easy to boot directly to using easybcd) It's got MB3, Plex, Twonky and Mediatomb installed and working. Minidlna failed, seems no longer in repository tried the .deb with no luck, Rygel, gmediaserver and what ever else I could find in the repo then and can't remember now, and totally forgot about xbmc. It's pretty big (2.93gb) up from 1.5gb from the live cd, but I left the downloaded apps in a folder on the desktop and installed guest additions to vbox, that's 500mb min, did a full update to mint not sure how many mb but it took 1hr+ so alot, and not being a linux wonk wasn't sure how slim it down.. I'll host the download on my router and see if anyone cares.. username:ms password:ms Well just tried installing my ova from scratch and get "no operating system" not sure where I f'd up..
