When are you implementing a waiting periode before alowing posting?

On the first 3 pages of new content there were 5 legitimate postings. This +91 country code crap has been reoccurring. You need to implement a posting wait period or approval for new users.

Many new users sign up just so they can get help for an issue they are having.  We don't want to punish them because of a little bit of spam.  We'll just continue to do our best to zap the spam as it comes in.

Would it be possible to implement some sort of captcha code for users newer than one week? I recently signed up for flex raid forums and had to do 3 small math problems to post for the first couple days of my account creation.

The math idea is kinda funny. How about for existing users we have them prove they've read the three posts prior to theirs before posting :P

As logical as that may sound the reality is quite different. When a user posts a problem he most likely does not expect an instant answer, if he does you don't want such an impatient person here anyhow. Most users are aware that getting an answer within a forum the next day is very acceptable and if you check those first time posters activity I am sure that it follows such patterns.

To allow 70 posts of spam within several minutes surely can be controlled. Most of the busy / popular forums that I sign up for, for the first time, have some form of control like "Your post has to be approved by a Moderator / Administrator". That surely is less time consuming then to ban the spammer & clean up his spam postings. Those +91 Country Code postings are not the first time that they appeared here and this forum is on their radar, expect more of the same.

I hardly think the moderators have the time to approve every post on this site. however, I still think a captcha code would be a good idea, if even for consecutive posts within 30 seconds of each other.

You did not understand the gist, when someone registers new, before his first message gets posted, NOT every message, that message should be having a monitor check, other boards do that in order to avoid what just happened, namely 70 messages soliciting sexual or matrimonial relationships. Now the person that posted the last batch of spam messages is banned. He registers again with a different proxy IP address and the matrimonial or sexual spam starts all over again, I counted these type of messages with +91 country code for the 3rd time. The only way to stop that is to not allow persons that registered to post within minutes of registration 70+ messages. Captcha code or math solutions can be very annoying for regular posters especially if the captcha code is hardly legible.

You are foolish in your thinking. Adding more hurdles to registration will create more problems than it solves. Please do not follow the advice of those unable to ignore spam. Any normal person knows its spam and can read around it. It happens on every forum and to assume something must be done to make registration more difficult to prevent it seems rash and unfriendly to new users. You do not want to go down that road. Moderators do a fine job removing the spam and banning users. There is no need to complicate anything. Stop over reacting, calm down and stop trying to police the internet.

So in short, you guys are doing enough on this forum policing it. Please do not listen to those spreading poor advice. Simply do as you guys have been doing. There isn't a need to do anything. The fact other sites do has no bearing here. The best spammer tool is active moderators. Maybe there needs to be more humans on patrol?

Weighing in here, and I agree with speechles.

Making it more difficult to post or register is not the way to go,keeping it simple be it with the forum or software or anything MB3 related will only improve the overall experience.

Captchas can be a pain but we do have one one when registering and imo that is suffice.

The spam is removed very quickly by any moderator that is online at the time and if I say so myself everyone does a good job at doing that.we have a quick and easy way to do it and all works well.

I agree with speechless and yogi. Adding more barriers to entry is unnecessary and would hardly be worthwhile. If a spammer is that intent on spreading their nonsense nothing will stop them. If it really is that much of a problem maybe more people on patrol would be useful as speechless said.

You are all fools!  I called Akbar and now I am getting married. I am allowed to have four wives and they're all virgins!  They arrive next week and I am so excited because they haven't eaten in weeks, they must be hot!  Not only that, after reading my palm through a scan I sent him with my driver's license and social security card he was able to determine that even though I am lily white, I am the heir to a fortune from a recently deceased Nigerian Prince!  I am sending a check now to get it to my bank in the US.  Who'd have thought I would have such great luck on Black Friday!  Another reason to love MediaBrowser!

Some forums take it to extremes...

I recently had an encoding question that I wanted to post to the doom9 forums. For some reason my account had been deleted (probably because I only post there very rarely).

Anyway, I had to sign up again - and I had to answer a number of questions to get my account created - and then I was in. I went to post my question - and I was hit with a message saying I had to wait 5 days before making my first post !

We get it fairly quick, but every so often they hit the forum when there isn't a mod. Rarely does spam stay on for more than a few minutes.

Yeah never seems to be that much. 3 accounts went nuts between 1 & 2 pm UK time but all posts seem to be gone now.

Something was done. Where is the spam now? Nothing more needs to be done. Relax. Breathe. It will be okay.
