Display of albumartist

I have yet another issue with albumartists. This is about what albumartists are being displayed in albumartist view.

The albumartist MP3 tag reads: "Chakuza & RAF Camora feat. Joshi Mizu" as one long single tag. This is also the name of the artist that Itunes is displaying it under.

Unfortunately, MBS displays two different albumartists for this album. And inconsistent from this, it only shows "Chakuza & RAF" at some other places. Screenshots explain better than many words...

Metadata manageer (shows correctly in left panel, but then only part of it on the right side)

In an very idealised world, MB3 would refer to musicbrainz to identify the split as

  1. Chakuza
  2. Raf Camora
  3. Joshi Mizu

But its probably asking too much for this to be prioritised.

Im not sure where we are up to on supporting multiple albumartists, if support is not there currently then it will be coming, luke i think has committed to this.

FWIW MB3 cant arbitrarily split on '&' as there are loads of album artists with & in them

Its quite impressive to split on 'feat.' thts more than most.

This is why you have the two albumartists (split on 'feat.'), but the album only shows the 1st.

The best solution i have found is to use an automated script in mp3tag that searches for known splitters and replace with a semicolon. and ensure the primary artist is 1st.

i have multiple scripts for when i know the artist contains special characters which should not split...i choose the appropriate script.

In this way, before i add content into the library i ensure any splitting characters are replaced and ; is used.

Thanks so much. This is very clear and also makes it very clear that this is actually not an MBS issue. It actually reads to me that Luke and the team have already done everything that they can and the remaining is a "tagger issue". What are you referring to what could still be done from MBS?

Can you elaborate a bit more about your manual "fix". Are you saying that I should rename "Chakuza & RAF Camora feat. Joshi Mizu" to "Chakuza; RAF Camora feat. Joshi Mizu"? And you suggest to do so by having a script to replace " &" by "; " for the albumartist field?

Thanks again, this is very helpful!

for artist and album artist i run a script like the above.

so i would rename to 'Chakuza;RAF Camora;Joshi Mizu'...you loose some of the intention..but it is more important to me me to find content by artist than the fact that this or that album only 'featured' one artist or another.

Got it, this is a solution - but not too nice either. I now understand better that this is actually not a MBS issue, but a general issue about multi-artists (same issue for artists and albumartists).

Itunes does not handle this better either and just grouping them like itunes does may not be ideal either. So, I believe no change required in MBS and all good!

I assume that MBS serving to DLNA clients will lead to the same display as in MBS, so the two are consistent?

I am starting to make manual changes, which is probably the easiest solution for my issue.

@@ginjaninja, reads like you have a lot of expertise with this. Have you tried DLNA and how DLAN clients display the "artist view". Will they use the artist view or the albumartist view? You understand what I am looking for. I currently don't have a DLNA client, but future television sets may bring this feature and I want to be prepared. I would hope that the "artist view" on a DLNA client would actually be a "albumartist view"?

i would try bubble upnp on your smartphone.. to see whats possible in relation to system generated virtual organisations under dlna..currently the only ones ive come across are cast n crew under films..i dont think there are any music ones..like recently added,  recently played,...the current music view is by album artist rather than artist.

in terms of dlna support  on tvs i would offer the following advice....

last time i looked in 2010 ..samsungs codec support was way better (h264 profiles, containers (flac and others)), ....the next thing to look out for is probably h265 support.

if your server has minimal transcoding horsepower it becomes more important that the tv doesnt need transcoded content..

reliance on DLNA is probably a non starter for anything other than the most rudimentary of support (that said an smartphone client with dlna playto, is a significant step forward)..personally id spend money on a roku rather than extra dlna support in a tv...id concentrate on picture and other factors in the tv (and make use of a roku or some such...if my server was up to transcoding content)

if set on using dlna, id take a laptop with your sample content and services to a tv store and test with cross over cable...thats what i did.

I realized there are some issues with DLNA for the albumartists that MBS splits manually based on "feat." indication. Have you tried DLNA and does it work properly for those that are split based on the "/" that you have manually implemented for yours?

Given this is a separate issue, I have opened a new thread for this. http://mediabrowser.tv/community/index.php?/topic/17024-albumartists-over-dlna/&do=findComment&comment=165578
