Android Client (2.1.34) won't play any video. Crashes.

When on remote WiFi, it wouldn't connect; when on LAN WiFi, I can browse, but not play. The screen goes black as if the server is trans-coding but it just sits there indefinitely, then the phone screen times-out so that I have to hit the power button to take it out of standby. If I hit the home button before it times out, Android pops up that the app has stopped responding. I've tried streaming options with HLS and H264 strict both On/Off with no change. Bitrate is very low, 1.0Mb/s.

I thought this had to do with the Windows server update the other day since it coincided, but it appears that my phone is the only one that doesn't work anymore. Wife's phone and kid's tablets work fine (4 android devices); Roku's (3 of those) work fine. I've uninstalled and re-installed the app to no avail. The server log files are attached with today's date when I last tried. The phone doesn't contain a log from today, but 228 files in the logs folder.

Here is my original post regarding the server update - http://mediabrowser.tv/community/index.php?/topic/15617-server-updated-30546440000-but-now-cant-remote-connect/

I really need a client log to see what's going on. The server is just half the story. You said there was no log for that attempt. Can you try again and see if a client log is created.

Here are the logs from the past 15 minutes trying to connect via LAN WiFi, cellular, and MB Connect.

Only 1 server log generated during that time.

The Android client app has updated a couple times since this issue began, and neither my wife's nor my phone can play remotely.

Remote access through a web browser works fine.

I’m in the same boat… Iphone  and 2 Ipads and web clint all work great, all up to date. but my Samsung S5 just stopped working within the last few weeks. LAN WiFi works but very slow to load. Remote WiFi is a no go. I also uninstalled, and dropped all setting to 3mb all the way down. It selects the video/movie and looks as if its going to load but just spins and spins. Please help!!!!

having the same problem on 2.1.38, I can see ffmpeg churning, and see .TS files being created (I this what I'm supposed to see?).

Same result on CM11 phone, and my wife's TW Note tablet. I've never actually tried MB on android till yesterday.

Have you tried HLS ON/OFF setting in STREAMING OPTIONS?  I have had to Toggle this ON and/or OFF after some updates to get certain file types to play. (Mostly with Live TV streams.)

I checked the transcode log, and turning this off did help cause hls_base_url wasn't supported in the version of ffmpeg I have 2.2.4. With the setting off it looks like transcoding is working, but I still don't get any video on my phone. Will provide needed information when I have more time to pursue this issue.

I have the same problem on my Samsung S2 cell phone.  Via celluar connection, I can launch the app, connect to my server, see my libraries, select a movie, but when I select play, I get a black screen with the circular thinking wheel (whatever it's called) and it spins for maybe a second, then freezes.  I have had this problem for a couple weeks now, but haven't tried to connect to my server via wifi yet.

I also have a Samsung Galaxy 3 Tab, that is setup to connect to my server via wifi.  The tablet works fine.

Both have the apps showing version 2.1.38

I've disabled the HLS, but still mine doesn't work.  I've even tried un-installing the app, then re-installing, but no good.

I loved this app in the past, but it doesn't work any more.  Any other suggestions?  Can someone help with this issue?

I've found that I can cast to my TV, but I want to be able to use it on it's own.

I went back and turned on the debug feature on my phone, and on the server.  I hope these log files help answer the problem I'm having.  Also, I've noticed that my phone isn't showing up listed under Devices, but it shows up when my phone is connected to the Server.  It must have at one time, because I had renamed it to "My Cell Phone".

Thank you.

OP here again,

I can login from my phone now that I can get a prompt for manual login. I just type in the external IP and can browse remotely, but still cannot play a file. The app crashes when I select a video to play after about 60 seconds. It looks like it's transcoding but ffmpeg never starts on the server. The video comes up immediately when I play the same file in the remote browser, and ffmpeg runs just fine. (I remote desktop to my HTPC and watch the activity in Task Manager.)

Debug log is ON in the app, but no log file will generate. I have debug logging enable on the server for both general and transcoding, but the only time a transcode log is generated is when the browser plays a file, not the app. HLS setting doesn't change behavior.

How can I feed you log files that you ask for if the app will not create one when I'm having the issue?

Just changed phones, from my Samsung S2 with Android 4.1.2 to a Samsung S3 with 4.3.  The app works fine on the S3.

Just wanted to give you a little more input.  Good luck.
