Trello Board for MediaBrowser

I love this community and I'm super grateful to everyone putting in their free time to make MediaBrowser "The Ultimate Software".

I would like to have, as a user, an easier way to keep track of the progress being made and see what the Devs are working on. I don't know if it is a good idea, but I think it would be nice to have a Trello Board, which I believe is free. One of the advantages, is to make it easier to keep track of bug reports.

The reason why I'm suggesting this is with the current forum setup, information is spread out in an uneasy format. This causes a lot of repetition and gives off the feeling that bugs might have been forgotten or misreported. Having a Trello Board would also make it easier to see how popular a feature request is, and have a better sense of the direction MediaBrowser is going in. It would also clarify what bugs have been resolved.

What do you guys think of the idea?  :)

We already use github:

https://github.com/MediaBrowser/MediaBrowser/issues

We used to use trello, and honestly many of us still do, but at this point the usage is individual. I use it for smaller to-do type of items.

The github issue list is where anyone can file tickets if they wish.

Yeah sonarr is the same, but trello is a lot more user friendly for the average user then github and what is nice about trello is the easy way to see what is being worked on and its priority compared to git that just has a tag  and who is assigned. Git is more for Devs tracking each others progress and trello is more of a front end for end users to see the progress of the program in a simplistic way.

A perfect example is when a Feature request is made. Once you make it, you never know if it will be implemented...you just have to hope the there is enough votes for it to happen (btw..what is the max vote needed to have a FR approved?)

i think the forum though is the best place for you guys to submit requests and comment on them, etc.

i notice sonarr has an idea section on their trello board but that's not the route i want to take for us. with some of you posting in the forum, others on trello, it just creates more work for us to manage that. instead, tell us why you think the information in the forum is scattered so that we can improve that.

there is an Approved label but we just haven't been using it as much as we should.

I think the Approved and Declined tags need to be better enforced for the FR section so people know what is going on and what is going into the pipeline and what is not.

For issues, i dont know if its possible to force people to tag there post to make it easier to find issues.

Yea to be honest, trello is probably my favorite tool out of all these. It's just that if people are already using the forum then adding another tool just spreads the information out even more.

But very rarely is anything ever really declined. Our initial thoughts can always be proven wrong by user demand. That's why we try not to shoot anything down and instead just watch and see everyone else feels about it.

Well, I think it works either way, Github or Trello. Trello looks better however, haha. My main complaint was not having a clear glance over the progress being made. For example, the log stuck in debug when the program is restarted. I feel like it's been forgotten, because it's buried under hundreds of other posts. Now that I'm aware the Github is being used to open tickets, I will use it more.

It's a bit hard to explain how I feel as for the information being scattered. Sometimes, I experience a problem, then I have to sift through the whole forums to find that one post mentioning the fix. Maybe I won't find it, because the post is oddly named, or keywords are weird. I don't know if this makes sense, but personally, I feel that relying on the forums to know if a problem has been solved or not is not the way to go.  :)

I find Trello should always be for request and not the forum since trello has better tools to support a Feature Request structure. To force people to use it, i would simply lock the FR fourm section and have a final post redirecting them to trello.

If Git is suppose to be the place we report issues, then i think maybe a discussion thread should always contain a link to the issue on git. If other threads arise about the same issue, it should be redirected to the git link which should contain a link back to the main discussion thread of that issue. This way if i search for problem that has 5 different threads talking about the same thing and there is a link in each of them pointing back to 1 git issue, i can easily track back to the main thread and find a solution. Also the solution should be either posted in git or a link back to the final answer.

No you don't have to use Git to report issues. Truthfully you are free to use any of our public mechanisms for support, including the forums, github, and others. It's just the more we add the more work we create for ourselves.

But I do believe in using the right took for the job. We have always used the forum as a wiki out of convenience, but the layout really isn't suited for it. So now we're finally rectifying that and looking at having a legitimate wiki where people can read documentation. (you guys can help write).

Exactly my point, the forum is not an easy format to deal with all the information being posted on it.

I don't mind helping, you know that :) I will probably get around to helping a bit more, once I'm done with my chrome extension project.

If you guys get the wiki going, I would be willing to put in some time to help write documentation.

I think that implementing this would actually not take to much work.

Locking the FR forum and using Trello would be a good idea to track feature requests. Trello is great for that sort of thing (Adobe uses it for feature tracking for the text editor Brackets).

Also, I agree that each issue on the forums should have a link to a corresponding GitHub issue so that people have a way to track progress on whether or not the bug is being fixed by the devs.  I wouldn't say that you need to go to every current post and post a link but for issues in the future that would be a good idea.  I too find it difficult to track exactly what issues are being fixed and where features are in the development cycle.

Is there a list of subjects to be addressed for the wiki? It would be awesome if you could let us know what needs to be done. This would get things moving, for sure. Then if someone decides to make a guide, they can let others know, so people don't waste time writing the same guides.

Very nice, Luke.

If you need me to write up a page for something, just let me know, and I will see what I can do.

just pick an area you know best. it doesn't have to get done overnight so i'd rather just get one written with care than a whole bunch speed-written.

So I am attempting to push some images to the Wiki and I apparently don't have permission to do so.

Github handle is DaBungalow if you need that.

I just did the metadata manager section but it only on my local machine at the moment.

what does it look like? check here for some guidelines i wrote up.

it's almost hard to believe the wiki for the metadata manager could be done already, so i would say slow down and go for quality over speed. :) We want to teach people what they can't figure out just by looking at it themselves.
