Nexus Player

I am an impatient person, so I sideloaded the regular android app and it runs beautifully!

Except it doesn't use the Nexus Player's native interface.  But, for side-loaders, the mobile app could still be an option.

Ya leanback would be great. I ended up side loading since Google Cast is so buggy on the Nexus Player.

All in all I have been pretty frustrated with my Nexus Player, your app will be the first one to accutually make it worth my $100!

I have been using Media Browser since the Windows Media Center interface, it has been great to follow all of the progress and to be involved in such a great product.

Thank you all for all of your hard work!

(That being said, if you ever needed help testing for Android I would be glad to help! ;) )

Thanks.  I hope to have a test version of the new Leanback app within a couple weeks.

Cool, also a Nexus Player owner here . . .

Side question on Nexus Player if you don't mind. I can't seem to find any specs on supported formats. Anyone on the boards have this information or know where I can find it?

I have looked at Roku but it only supports MP4 so am very interested in Nexus Player.

Also, does the Nexus Player support DTS and Dolby Digital (passthru is fine)?

I've been running SPMC (XBMC optimized for the NP) and have been able to play my video_ts folders- though for some reason they were a little slow to start, and when you stopped the video it took up to 30/40 seconds to return to the movie list. Converted everything to MKV and they run perfectly and much faster when starting/stopping.

This thing has pretty much replaced my HTPC. I love it.

Cool. But does it transcode xvid files from Media Browser?

Well, kodi doesn't have any transcoding unless you install the mediabrowser Python add-on from the kodi section of the forums here

I have some old xvid videos with mp3 audio wrapped in an avi container. They can direct play in Kodi, but they would not direct play in the android video player I'm afraid

In the sideloaded mediabrowser app (by redshirt, not really made for android TV) the same file will transcode whether h264 is set to strict or not. This gets back to what the default android player supports I'm afraid

As far as running the mediabrowser add-on in kodi, there's still some optimization needed for it to run more efficiently similar to what's still needed for the fireTV. Python parsing json isn't very fast on the nexus player or fire TV just yet IMO

You are talking about something completely different when you bring Kodi into the mix.  The original question was about whether the device could natively play back any of these formats.

Right, I tried to make that clear

There's a difference in what the device can support from just a hardware standpoint vs what it can do from the native android player

I have a feeling this question will never go away as long as alternative players like mxplayer exist in android making it easy for comparisons to be made

:)

Yes that is what I would like to know. If I get a Nexus Player and install the Media Browser App on it, which formats will be played natively and which ones will be transcoded.

Sorry, assumed wrong

For at least the sideloaded app you'll see transcoding for non-h264 video in my experience (which includes mpeg2, xvid, and vc1 - I don't have anything other than that to test)

Also, none of that is related to the upcoming app by ebr . . . all based on my experience with the side loaded mb app from redshirt

As you are likely more interested in what ebr's app will do I'll stop talking and let him fill in details when he's ready ;)

So basically about the same as a Roku then?

Just reading through this thread and a bit confused.   Is it possible for MB app running on Nexus or Fire TV to playback h.264 content natively, ie without it being transcoded?
