Lighthammer

Those Cortex A5s are really crappy processors. I mean they're decent in a budget phone, but they're really not up to the task of running something sophisticated like a Google TV.

I'd steer away from this.

Yikes, that's not what I wanted to hear Lighthammer! I was hoping it would be a decent android app platform. Guess I'll see when it eventually arrives.

Is anything solid that runs Android TV that can direct play everything? Something around the $100 range?

Nexus Player?

It will direct stream it - not direct play it.  I have tested out several TV shows on my main 65" TV and cannot discern a video quality difference between the Nexus and direct play with MBC.  I've done limited testing so far though.

EBR,

What's the difference?  Is there any transcoding with direct stream?

I see the Nexus player also has 802.11ac which will make a difference compared to some of the other streaming sticks that may only use 802.11n.

Transcoding takes your file and converts it from one format to another or one bit rate to another. For instance converting 7.1 DTS Audio to Stereo is a form of transcoding. Or taking your 20 Mbps bluray video and converting it to 3 Mbps.

Streaming takes your file and breaks it up into smaller pieces so it will move over the network easier.

Typically the system can do both of these at anytime. With direct streaming, the file isn't converted, it is just broken into network sized pieces for easy consumption.

Thanks ebr. What about audio? Can i decode DTS/AAC etc? Does it support 7.1?

It supports AAC audio like other Android devices. Great for kitchens, bedrooms, and dens. Probably not the best for your primary theater.

I'm thinking more for my living room, although I have my NUC there which seems to be ok.
