How to use/enable MBC internal player

First, I wasn't aware that MBC had an internal player.

I am trying to figure out how to make it work for just listening to music.  I use external players for movies (TMT6).  I thought I would just need to un-check the boxes for the audio formats in the configurator when configuring the external players and that this would force MBC to use it's internal player when playing a format that was not linked to an external player (like FLAC, MP3, WMA).  This was not the case.  When I try to play a track from a ripped CD, nothing happens.  Under the Playback menu I have the boxes checked, assuming that would activate the internal player.

What am I doing wrong?

WMC is reporting it cannot play.  Do you have some other application that is playing music in WMC?

Error playing item: ( Exception. Type=Microsoft.MediaCenter.AddIn.ApplicationControlDisabledException Msg=Operation is not valid due to the current state of the object.

No, nothing else going on.  I rebooted and went straight into MBC and tried playing a song from a rip but same thing, just sits there.

I can manually start WMP with no problem.

I can even assign WMP as an external player for audio files and it plays.  The only issue with that option is the WMP window is not full screen so I see much of the desktop. Also, I cannot find a way to get back to Mediabrowser once the song I was playing ends.

I then realized that MB has an internal player and wanted to try that route, but not having any luck.

It isn't MB with an internal player.  It is WMC.  And that is not exactly the same thing as WMP.

Okay, understood.

Are you saying that I should see the same problem if I tried to play an audio file from WMC (not going into MBC) ?  So MBC is just using WMC player?

Yes, MBC is just using the WMC internal player but that does not necessarily mean you will see the same problem in the WMC Music Library.  The error is basically telling us that our application does not have permission to play music right at that moment.  That's why I asked if maybe there was some other WMC plug-in that might have hijacked playback.

You should try with the normal Music Library though because, sometimes, WMC gives red herring error messages when the problem is really that the content cannot be played.

I tried it from WMC and the music played fine.  I then changed the default application for MP3s.  At some point it got changed to TMT6 (probably when I installed it long ago).

Once I did that, then the music would play from within MBC.  But not always.  It would seem like I can play a few songs, but then it stops playing them when I try and select one.  I noticed in task manager that WMP was still running, and it was consuming 17Mb.  I killed it, restarted WMC, then went into MBC and the songs would play again, but only a few and then the problem would come back.  It is not consistent.  But it seems that at some point while playing music files, the WMP app gets hung?

I have attached another log file in case that helps shed more light.

What, exactly, does that mean?

I can play a song.  Then stop it and go back and select another song.  It may play or it may not play (original symptom).  If it plays I can stop it or let it finish and seek another song.  The next song may/may not play.  there is not apparent consistency to it.  I could get through 5 songs, then the 6th will no play.  Or it could happen on the 2nd.

That's when I went into Task manager and noticed wmplayer.exe was still running and consuming 15-17Mb.  I killed it and went back into MBC and was able to play music again via the internal player.  Simply backing out of MBC to the main WMC GUI does not correct the issue when it starts happening.  I actually have to end WMC.  then I can restart WMC, then enter back into MBC and begin to play songs until it happens again.

That's why I thought that wmplayer.exe is not being told to shut down properly/getting in some hung state???

That may be but, if it is, it is a WMC bug unfortunately.

But if it does not exhibit this behavior when playing from WMC but only from within MBC, how would you suggest I go about troubleshooting it?

I'm sorry, I don't have any good ideas.  Have you tried queuing songs instead of playing and stopping?

No, I have not tried queuing.  Will give it a shot.

  Queuing did not help.

I also realized that it exhibits the same symptom, regardless of wmplayer.exe being on in the background.  The times I checked previously it was there.  This time it was not and everytime I would try to play a track from with in MBC, nothing would happen.

I have setup MPC-HD as an external player for music files.  It's not as smooth and more clumsy to use, but it's the only consistent option for now.

Is there anywhere I can go to see what sort of arguments I can use when setting up an external player?

The MPC docs.  The arguments are just what is passed to the external player on the command line.
