MediaBrowser Android Transcode Issue

I found out last night that mediabrowser 3 server is transcoding all of my files that get sent to my phone. I tested the same files out on my plex server to my plex app and there was no transcoding needed and no lag.

If the file did end up playing, I was not able to pause and restart the file at all. My phone would go to sleep and kill the transcode before it started playing again.

My phone is a Samsung S3.

Server is a Core i3 2100 w/ 8GB Ram.

This was all tested over a wireless network.

Hi, when you say wireless do you mean WIFI or mobile network? I just tried mine out on both. I have a Sony Xperia Z2 and my server is on a qud core athlon 3.something processor and 8gb ram and things are working quite well. It always transcodes to WEBM format for MB3 which is really handy for mobile use. Also different devices natively play different formats of video so transcoding is a must really. I don't really know how all this stuff works to any depth but I have made some observations that may help. You may need to check a few things.

How much processor is being used when it is being transcoded? If it maxes out the processor that could slow you down. Setting the maximum bitrate setting on your device is one thing to look at, the lower the setting the more work your server has to do. Over WIFI it can be set quite high dependent on your signal. One way to check your WIFI signal is to speed test your internet on a wired PC, then from your device over WIFI. If it is a lot slower you may have a weak signal. Or there is wifi apps on Google play.

You can also use an external player like Rockplayer 2 or MX player. This turned out handy for me in the early MB3 days. Plex must be able to play these formats directly but over a mobile network this isn't very economic.

Is your PC busy doing anything else? If you are on mobile network simply downloading (on your PC) may throttle your upload speed which. Upload speeds are generally 10% of your download speed (in the UK anyway) and is the real bottleneck for this system. In fact I am starting to wonder if this is is one of the issues that is causing connection problems with MB3.

Oh, I just tried one more thing. Are you using the app or a browser? I just tried to use the browser and noticed that does stutter a bit. It maxes the processor out. Then upped the bitrate to the maximum allowable and it became much quicker. (still maxed the processor out though.

I would have to look at the transcode logs for these videos but it is possible that what is showing as transcoding is really just stream copying to a container that is digestable by your device. If you post the transcode logs, I can tell you for sure.
