Sonos Play 5 and Connect working

Just to confirm that both my Sonos Play 5 and Sonos Connect are working fine to stream music from MB3 via DLNA.

Just tried playing music (mp3) to both my Sonos Play:5 abd Sonos PlayBar, but not everything plays.

 

Getting 500 error messages in server log on some music, but other music plays fine.

 

99% of my music are mp3's.

I have also plenty of MP3s. I am using the latest dev build and it worked just fine.

how do we know what media types the sonos will accept? my library is split between mp3 alac and flac, i guess alac and flac will need to be transcoded? is there a guide to setting this up? cheers

According to Sonos, FLAC is supported.

 

Support for compressed MP3, iTunes Plus, WMA, AAC (MPEG4), AAC+, Ogg Vorbis, Audible 

(format 4), Apple Lossless, Flac (lossless) music files, as well as uncompressed WAV and AIFF 

files.

Native support for 44.1kHz sample rates. Additional support for 48kHz, 32kHz, 24kHz, 22kHz, 

16kHz, 11kHz, and 8kHz sample rates.

Note: Previously purchased Apple “Fairplay” DRM-protected songs may be upgraded. See Apple 

for details. AAC Enhanced and WMA Lossless formats not currently supported.

 

As far as I know, the only big omission with Sonos is DTS, but that's only an issue with movies. It is a moot point anyway because even if you set up the Sonos Soundbar and two speakers as a "home theatre", Sonos will only take a stereo signal, not 5,1. Then it applies math-fu to the signal to give an impression of surround. The movie sound buff in me cringes at the very thought.

Cool, so I just need to transcode alac. I'm sure alac was a bad choice but my Idevices are central to my music habits

From the above alac (apple lossless) is supported too! Must have been the bit rate errors others are reporting then. More testing needed!

Also another good option is using XBMC (Kodi) with the XBMB3C addon as you can set the audio settings to state that you do not have a DTS compatible receiver..it will then automatically output something the soundbar can output.

Fair points. I had forgotten that Sonos does support 5.1 if the optical output is 5.1. Most TVs unfortunately downmix 5.1 to 2.0, and Sonos is adamant about using the TVs output instead of a receiver.

 

Question, can Sonos really take Dolby Digital or does Sonos need a PCM input? DD is not mentioned as a supported format.

 

On a side note, and speaking from personal experience only, DTS sounds noticeably better than DD+.

Yeah I won't be using sonos for anything non audio, the play bar got very mixed reviews, mainly as a result of connectivity concerns if I remember correctly, but I'll be using the audio equipment in every room

That seems to be the way to do it. The music and multi-room stuff seems fantasic, but the Playbar is only really a "solution" if you come from TV speakers. It boggles the mind what Sonos was thinking with the Playbar product. You'd think they would want to make real inroads with the home theater enthusiast crowd, large parts of which (myself included) are salivating over a Sonos multi-room system. Instead they start by ignoring DTS...

 

The only advantage the Playbar has over any other soundbar is the Sonos integration. In contrast, a Samsung soundbar with included wireless sub costs less than a quarter compared to the Sonos Playbar with Sonos Sub, and to add insult to injury it supports DTS.

Tell me about the price, £600 is a lot for a non-DTS device, but then I knew about it before I bought it.

 

Multi-room playback is excellent and the sound is awesome.

 

DD 5.1 playback on the PlayBar rocks the room and I'm more than happy with it.

 

There's quite a few requests for DTS to be added on the Sonos forums.

I can play MP3 and FLAC audio without issue, but I don't have any ALAC audio though.

All mp3s? So something changed from your post above? Ok I'll so some testing and digging around in the log to see what error messages show up. Apple lossless = alac afaik

Yes, ALAC is Apple's version of FLAC.

ok, i've had a play around and i still don't really understand dlna. i seem to be able to play mp3's to my sonos one but trying flac or alac fails the transcoding (or something along these lines from the log). but the sonos can play both flac and alac so i guess i need to use the profiles.

 

well i tried setting up a profile, set to audio only and to direct play flac and mp4 as well as mp3 but what i can't see is how i'm supposed to match the profile and the sonos so that when i remote play it uses the profile rather than the default.

 

hopefully i've explained this clearly, i couldn't see anything in the wiki on how this should work?

Do you have another profile that contains this information?  If not have you tried adding this information to your custom profile?

according to the router i have sonos ZP at 50 and sonos ZB at 27. i only have one sonos and only 50 shows as a remote client in the server
