gcoupe 63
I'm being stupid, but I can't find out how to turn off the remote access over the internet to my server. I just want the server to be visible to clients sitting in my home network, not to the entire internet. How do I do this?
techywarrior 688
There is no explicit option. If your server doesn't have a public IP and your router isn't doing port forwarding then there is no way for a remote computer to connect to your server. If you have port forwarding setup in your router to your server (for the specific ports used for MB3) then turn those off If your server is directly connected to your internet connection and all your computers have public IP addresses... well then there is no way to prevent it anyways since all your computers would appear to be on the internet. But I am guessing you have a router doing NAT so the answer is simply "it already is unavailable from the internet" (as long as you didn't already setup port forwarding in the router to your server on the two ports for MB3)
gcoupe 63
OK, thanks, that's helpful. I don't have port forwarding set up for the MB3 server, so I assume I'm OK. I should test it sometime soon to be certain though.
MrFlibbles 21
I think more people will be surprised to find their collections are automatically visible from the internet. UPnP is enabled by default in MBS and most home routers I believe. You can disable this in the web console under advanced by unchecking "enable automatic port mapping". If you wanted a little extra assurance without putting passwords on accounts, you could also set MBS and clients to require manual username entry. Most clients will keep the username and autologon as that user. However, if you regularly log in as different users this might not be a user friendly option.
gcoupe 63
Thanks, that was even more helpful. As you said, the default settings of MB3 meant that it had automatically setup port forwarding in my router without my being aware of it. A rather unpleasant surprise. gcoupe 63
It asks you in the startup wizard. I'm sure it did, but perhaps the implications weren't clear enough for me. In any event, I ended up in a place where I would rather not be.
ebr 14905
It asks you in the startup wizard. Unless you upgraded from a version that didn't have this feature.
crashkelly 62
Hi, @@ebr @@Luke Not sure if this can be considered dragging up an old topic, but my install of MBS is available external to my network and I definitely do not want it to be. I have unchecked "Enable automatic port mapping", did this quite some time ago, and I do not have port forwarding on my router, never did as it is a new router and I have never set it up for that. I have been with MB3 since inception so when I first installed there was probably nothing about it in the start up wizard. I tested from work with my smartphone and get in and retested here at home, with Wi-Fi disabled on the phone, and got in as well. What can I do to ensure external access is not on? Thanks CrashKelly
ebr 14905
Be sure the router isn't setup to port-forward for the server. Since you've turned off the automatic setting, it shouldn't come back.
Happy2Play 8252
Have you restarted your router?
crashkelly 62
Be sure the router isn't setup to port-forward for the server. Since you've turned off the automatic setting, it shouldn't come back. Have you restarted your router? That is the thing. I bought a brand new router 6 months ago when we moved to a new house and I never did anything with port-forwarding at all. The router has been restarted a number of times, but I cannot recall if I have restarted it after I unchecked "Enable automatic port mapping" Will reboot the router later to be sure and post back. Would the fact that I had "Enable automatic port mapping" checked, due to that being the default in MBS, have done anything that is now sticking on the router? I know that is unlikely, but I thought I would put it out there. Cheers CrashKelly
crashkelly 62
Okay, got it. There is port-forwarding and then there is upnp port-forwarding. I had never manually setup port-forwarding for MB3 but because the "Enable automatic port mapping" was checked at one time it created a record on the router for upnp port-forwarding to the MB3 ip address. I disabled upnp port-forwarding which cleared the entries and then re-enabled it and so far nothing for MB3, which as @@ebr said, should not come back as the setting is now unchecked. Cheers and thanks for the help CrashKelly EDIT: Thinking about it, I probably have not rebooted my router since I made the change to disable automatic port-forwarding and that might have cleared it up as well Edited September 3, 2014 by crashkelly
skidmarks 188
Thanks for the topic / thread... I did not realize the upnp was in the server settings and default was set to on. Think ebr is right that if you've been doing the updates since MB3 came on line maybe it could have been missed by some. I do have a static IP address and have been trying to figure out why I had a device attaching to my server named "game room". I have no device with that name. Logged into the router and sure enough upnp had a port forward set up. Hey "Game Room" if you read this thread... Sorry, but movie night is over from my server!
