Combine Server with MBC/MBT a good idea?

Right now I have two older PC’s, one running MB Server which is on 24/7 and the other Running MBC/MBT which I turn on as a client when watching movies in my theater. As these are both older machines and I want to start using things like MadVR and 3D playback, I thought I would build a new HTPC and then combine the Server and Client((s) for the theater room). Is this a good idea or not? I know others have both the server and client on one machine and I did that as well at one point, but it was not running 24/7 and was only being used for the theater at that time.

One of the big issues I see is with Windows 7 and the Receiver (HDMI) sound device. I have noticed that when I turn off my Onkyo 818 with the Client PC running, I hear the disconnect sound from windows and the Onkyo HDMI sound device drops. When I turn on the Onkyo again, the sound device doesn’t always come back which forces me to reboot the client PC. If that was also running the server I would interrupt others in the home using it, so that’s no good at all. My Video/sound card is Nvidia if that make any difference. Anyone else have this issue or other problems running this combined configuration?

Thanks!

If your server is used for anything else than that one client - or you think it ever will be - I would leave it as a separate machine.  If you aren't having trouble with it now and you don't require a lot of transcoding, the current machine it is on may suffice.

Just as a suggestion if you haven't purchase parts yet to built your new HTPC. I would advise you to get an intel NUC. Extremely low on power; therefore, you can keep it running 24/7. The video firmware has recently been updated for receivers usage. When you power off the receiver the sounds goes off. When you power the receiver back up the sound resumes automatically. No reboot requires.

I am currently running both my server and client on the same box. No issues.

I have always had server and client in one and I don't leave it on 24/7. I wil let it sleep when idle. MBC has a wake on lan option that works very well and I have never experienced any HDMI issues but I use intel onboard video. I am sure you already updated video drivers and the other usual stuff.
