Subtitles not working - Dev build

Just figured I'd give a heads up for the next build - in Dev build 3.0.5306.32477, at least on my computer, no subtitles work - not pgs, vobsub, nothing. I've tried playing videos through the web player to see if there's any difference - videos with vobsub play fine (the same videos do not currently show subtitles in mbt), my internet connection isn't strong enough to see if pgs will play. It definitely seems like the problem is mbt (I haven't changed any of my lav settings and the subtitles worked in the last build as far as I'm aware), so I figured I'd bring the problem to your attention, and I hope you'll be able to fix it soon.

Thanks.

Server version is: 3.0.5312.36960

MB Theater version is: 3.0.5306.32477

Server and Theater logs are attached.

To walk step by step through the process the logs cover.

I started mb theater, resumed repo men (both movies played were already started, in order to be immediately on dialogue and keep the logs shorter). Subtitles are pgs and were default off, turned them on and even though the osd said they were selected, they did not show up. Second file played was beauty and the beast. Subtitles are vobsub, and default on (and forced, if that makes a difference), because I don't speak french. Subtitles did not show up, despite showing on the osd as selected, so I turned them off and then back on. No change, subtitles were still not visible on screen despite being selected in the osd. As I said earlier, vobsub subtitles work when playing on web player (I used the same movie to test, in fact), but not when playing through mb theater, on either of two computers. I changed every lav filter setting I could think of, in case that was the problem, but unfortunately nothing worked. Considering they started out that step exactly as they were before the problem arose, I'm not surprised.

I dont have this issue, at least not for pgs subs.

MBT just uses lav filters, i dont think that has changed.

I am aware of that. Considering that the subtitles had been working prior to upgrading the software (and having not changed lav at all until attempting to fix this very problem), I figured that might be the problem. Maybe there's something in the logs? I can't make heads or tails of them, but hopefully they help someone else to fix the problem (hell, if it turns out something somehow got changed on lav, maybe it'll tell me how to change it back, because I've tried everything I can think of)

logs look fine. subs tested fine here. you might want to look at lav/xyvsfilter settings.

This is what I was originally hinting at, it has to be something in lav splitter or unless you changed something in xyfilter as well.

Looking at your logs xyfilter is set to false? Try enabling it. It should be installed when you installed mbt, at least back when i installed it i needed it. That may not be the issue but i would try to enable it to see.

I originally had it on, but when the problem started I turned it off. Turning it back on does seem to fix vobsub, although it does nothing for pgs. Updated logs attached, with 2 new movies to shake things up a little. Both have pgs. The first one defaults with subtitles off, the second with them on, in case that makes a difference.

As for lav splitter, two things: one, pgs/sup appears no where in the input formats, in case that makes a difference. As for how it's set up, in the settings page I have enable system tray icon and load mastroska segments from external files checked, enable vc-1 timestamp correction set to auto, 256 for maximum queue memory, and 1000 as the stream analysis duration. Splitter version is 0.62.0. Selection mode is default, and no other boxes are checked and nothing is in the preferred languages boxes (I've tried that, not only does it do nothing in this case all it does is put up subtitles every single time they're available, even if I don't want them.

Unless he returns for an update im guessing xyfilter was the issue for anyone in the future, my pgs subs dont appear unless thats ticked in mbt.

Unless I am missing something, I have not been able to get subtitles to work in MBT. I thought with the implementation of the subtitle download feature, it would be able to display subtitles. So far I am using VLC as an external player so that I can view subtitles.

Hmm, not sure what more to say, but here goes.

I am using shark007, so maybe I need to configure something there.  Is the subtitle feature supposed to work straight out the box, or are there some specific settings I need to make sure are enabled? I will provide some screenshots of my various setup screens in MBT.

Are you using shark for any particular reason?

MBT only requires LAV filters, and I always find shark filters install way too many codecs.

I have only LAV installed, along with xysubfilter (both installed by MBT) and then I configure LAV splitter with an advanced string of *:*|f;eng:off;*:eng,*:*

This gives only forced subs for English audio, and English subs for foreign audio.

Well I have always used shark, I did not know that Lav would allow the subs to play. I will remove shark and see. In the interim, I disabled my external player option and tested some movies (shark still installed). The subs play for mkv, and avi, they do not display for mp4. I will remove shark and see how things work then. Thanks for everything.

I removed Shark, and tested, got the same result as before when Shark was installed; no subs for mp4 files. Subs work for avi and mkv files.

The only mp4 files I have are home movie videos. They don't have any subs.

Maybe someone else can comment on that side of things :-)

Hello guys,

What kind of subtitles? External or Embedded?

On which system MBT runs? the same with MBServer or a different one?

I have problem only with external ones.

MBT recognises Subtitles of any type (srt, txt, idx/sub, pgs/sup e.t.c) either they are external or embedded in the media-file, but before playback starts.

The problem is when playback starts.

To figure out why some people say they have no problem with subtitles and some other (including me) say they have, I set up two different MB Servers,

one on my laptop and another one on my desktop PC. The laptop runs Win7-x86 and the desktop Win7-x64.

Then I installed MBT on my laptop exactly the suggested way, with LAV Filters only (no other codecpack) and xy-VSFilter.

All media files are shared in local network and library folder paths are set with their UNC paths.

Here are my tests:

1) First I connected MBT to the local MBServer and played video files with any kind of Subtitles, external (srt, idx/sub) and embedded (srt, idx/sub, pgs/sup). No problem at all.

This way I guess, I can be sure that MBT setup is ok.

2) Then I connected MBT to my desktop MBServer and played the same video files. Only the embedded subs are played.

3) Finally, I set up my router to address requests on port 8096 to my desktop PC and connected my laptop-MBT to my desktop MBServer from a friend's home and played the same video files.

All Subtitles are played just fine, I guess because MBServer embeds them in the streaming chunks of the original video it creates.

Unless there is anyone else to prove me wrong, I think the only way (at least for now) to use MBT, on a different pc in local network, is to set it up with external player as already has been mentioned.

Personally I'll keep on using MBClassic in my home network, since I never had any problem playing anything.

If logs and/or screenshots are required for further investigation please let me know and will upload asap.

But I think anyone implementing scenario #2 can have the same logs.

I am having subtitle issues as well. I am on the most current version of server and mbt. mkv are not showing subs and some mp4 and avi shows subs while some are not. I have been trying to find some commonality to determine what triggers the subs to show vs what does not. I don't have any codecs installed other than what is part of vlc and mpc-hc which I am using as external players so that I can see the subs until I get this resolved. Should I install any codecs like klite or shark007? I thought maybe it was becuase I had manually dowloaded the subs, so I deleted those and allowed the server to redownload them, still no joy. I welcome all tips and suggestions. I attached my splitter settingspost-2499-0-42840500-1433635879_thumb.png

I've also had subtitle-related problems for months now, not sure why. I only occasionally need forced subtitles or English subs for foreign films, so in those cases I've just resorted to burning them in in Handbrake. It's obviously not the best solution but has saved me a lot of aggravation until it's resolved.

you shouldn't have to install anything. have you tried pulling up the OSD during playback?

Was that question/suggestion to me? If so, that would not apply to me as some show and some don't. I have never toggled with the OSD.

well it would still apply to you in terms of trying to gather useful information about what works for you and what doesn't, which can help us isolate the problem.

Good point, my apologies for my response. I am leaning towards possibly flushing/purging my metada and letting Emby regenerate and see what happens. Like MB classic, is there a way to do this on MBT? Unless uninstalling, offers an option to clear all settings and metada or maybe just the settings. I have MBT on multiple computers and the result is the same in terms of what subs are displayed or not displayed. Does setting the splitter to use forced subs only mean it won't play the auto downloaded subs but only the subs I manually downloaded? I guess the better question is, what is considered forced subs and external subs? My guess is external subs are subs not embedded (hard coded) in the video file.
