Oh, sorry. Using tapatalk it doesn't show the poll at the top. I will open via a browser. :-)

You can vote for both.  I did.  I started off writing this thing for OpenElec, but it took over for WMC eventually on my Windows box.

Well, you have to keep in mind that:

1. There are more and more people moving to Roku etc - and ease-of-use crowd is likely moving there

2. There are two other Windows solutions

3. Two years ago, combining XBMC and MediaBrowser would have been considered heresy - and some around here still have war wounds from when the two programs competed more head to head.

I do agree though that it not hard to use XBMC.  WAY easier than all the crazy codec stuff with WMC.

ok, i posted this around the turn of the year and was firmly put in my place by the powers that be and told i didn't know what i was talking about. i also posted something similar on the latest server thread.

I am one of those windows users you were trying to attract. the reasons why you failed are summed up by xnappo.

firstly i have used WMC for five years. its still the only game in town for live tv. xbmc's implementation of it is horrible in my opinion. i said 9 months ago that you guys should have gone for the wmc crowd by getting live tv in the server and supported in MBT as quickly as possible. WMC people were desperate for a solution to replace WMC and if they've found one over the last 9 months its not mediabrowser

yes i have a perhaps irrational dislike of xbmc which does stem from point 3 of xnappo's post. i don't particularly find the xbmc community very warm or helpful, the skins are promoted as one of the biggest benefits but i couldn't find any that didn't have bugs in one way or another.

for me, until MBT with live tv is available i'll stick with WMC. xbmc gets used where i have no other option

@@Spaceboy - so basically not matter what we(XBMB3C team) do, you will dislike it?  That is real encouraging :)

i know you've smilied that but thats not completely fair. despite the raspberry pi being the limiting factor in my experiences with xbmc3 i've given fair and balanced feedback on the work you've done. i was just commenting yesterday on the titan skin i've just stuck on the pi. but my point was it is my last resort

I moved from WMC many months ago and I have had 0 issues. I am using NextPVR which is used by the server. Live TV comes through to my Roku, I watch it via XBMC.

I don't really understand what people find so hard about setting up XBMC either.

I downloaded the program, ran the installer, downloaded the zip file for the plugin repo went into addons and installed via that and then installed the Confluence mod and voila, everything worked great!

I guess it is very real that you will not be able to please everyone. I know of no media solution that does everything I want out of the box anyway. I have used Mediaportal, XBMC by itself and Plex. Media Browser with xbmc comes the closest to an overall solution imho.

I am currently using Windows 8. I started with Windows 7. Everyone needs to work with what they have.

Just for learning purposes, what is wrong with xbmc's live tv solution?

mostly that it comes across as an afterthought and maybe it was at the time i was trying it. for me live and recorded tv is the centre of my htpc and this is how WMC treats it. xbmc treats is as some dirty guest that you have to keep in the garage

live tv, recorded tv and the guide need full integration into the database so that searches would cover them and they are mixed into the media views that mb3 presents you with. it was clear xbmc was never going to get to that point

You make a valid point in that it was a bit of an afterthought..this has been acknowledged and the Live TV section is getting constant improvements as they go along. The helix roadmap wants to scrape recordings into the database, the guide has seen some big changes too. It also supports the most Live TV backends without anyone else near, I presume with WMC you have to use a windows live tv backend...not everyone wants to use windows as their OS for these sort of tasks.

Having not been around this scene two years ago to hear of MediaBrowser competing with xbmc, I can only state my experience in that with this addon they compliment each other very well. Hopefully MBT will provide you with the features you require.

Well this is a good time to discuss my setup.

Indeed - I am forced to continue to use WMC for LiveTV since I use a cable card.

My other 'hacking' hobby is remote controls, and I have things set up to dynamically switch between WMC and XBMC - it is working pretty much just like how I had MBC set up:

1. Shows are scheduled to be recorded in WMC.  If the 'Guide', 'Live' or 'List' button is hit, autohotkey checks if WMC is open, and if not launches it and goes to the appropriate section

2. A once-a-night script runs to sort my recorded TV into MB folders.  Non-protected WTV files are renamed to .MPG (why later)

3. My remote has an XBMC button that launches XBMC and there is also an XBMC icon in my WMC menu

4. .WTV files are set up to launch WMC as an external player, otherwise the internal XBMC player is used.

Nuts?  Yes...  I hate cable cards and TWC CCI protection on EVERYTHING other than the big 4!

ok, but, if you're just talking about being able to browse a guide and schedule recordings, the xbmc layouts that i've seen look pretty darn good to me. Plus you have to consider, how many alternatives are there really, other than wmc, and eventually us? I am not speaking about you here but one thing about a lot of people in this niche is that they are often very picky, to the point where they are discrediting solutions that they would probably be happy with if they just gave it a try. if you keep waiting around for something perfect, you may find that you never get it. at some point you just have to sit down and watch a movie and just enjoy what it does have.

Actually @@Luke you make fair points. But, I'm going to say I'm not the primary arbiter in my household. Personally I can deal with pretty much anything. But there is a significant other that doesn't always share my opinions.

At the moment it's about matching the competition on that OS and for me xbmc is miles away from wmc. MBT is as well which is why I stay with wmc. The weakness of wmc is also the lack of integration but I'm not going to move from one bit of software that does 80% of what I need to one of two that does 60%

I used wmc and xbmc for a while because wmc handles tv very well and xbmc handles videos very well but I always hoped to use one software instead of jumping back and forth. MBC is doing that job really well. I tried live tv in xbmc and it cannot replace wmc.

I have 5 TV's spread across the house and Live TV is used at each of them...I have 2x HDHomeRun's (networked TV Tuners') that between them allow up to 4 different programs to be watched/recorded at the same time (more if you're watching say ABC 1 and 2 as that is in the same frequency range only uses one of the tuners).

The back end is all NextPVR as WMC does NOT support a client/server architecture....DVBlogic is crap is my opinion and using WMC Extenders are too limiting...

So that is a BIG reason to ditch WMC, multi room....clearly XMBC's Live TV support that integrates with many (not just WMC) is best solution...well, best until MB3 get it all finalised ;-)
