Using VLC As External Player Does Not Return To MBC After Playing File

Perhaps this is normal behavior. When using VLC as the external player, it launches ok and the file plays fine. But after the video ends, I'm stuck with a blank VLC window (restored down, no less). It does not return me to MBC.

Since I cannot move the curser with my remote, I have to get up, go to the pc, grab the mouse, and manually close VLC. After that, MBC returns.

Do I have something set wrong?

I don't know about VLC but, with other players, they have an option to close whenever the video stops.  You need this same kind of option in VLC.  Or to setup a remote control command that will close it.

Yeah, I figured that too. The only thing I found was under "File", close after playlist finishes (or something similar). That doesn't do it.

Damn it Chloe, we're running out of time. Use the not a computer device!

I was using VLC for a while until the huge improvements ebr made to the default player so I use that exclusively in MBC now. However, in VLC if you go to tools>preferences> then at the bottom left under show settings click 'all' then go to 'advanced' and select 'allow only one instance' and then go to playlist and select 'play and exit' - that should work. iirc that's how I got it to work for me.

Coll, I'll try that. Thanks.

The default player is WMC's player, right? I've had issues with it playing some of my mkv's. And I've also had problems figuring out how to turn subs on and off with it.

yes that is the default - but with ebr's work it is running much better than ever. Subs however, is a different story with that - there's a thread on that if you search the forums

This worked, but at the end, it was go to playlist, and both "allow only one instance" and "play and exit" were there.

I never understood why people choose to use an external player and make their lives difficult. Convert your dvds to iso and mount them or MKV or MP4. MBC plays iso fine. At least it does for me. If you want subtitles support. Either use MediaControl or MCERemotePlus. I couldn't get MediaControl to work but MCERemotePlus works great and easy to setup.

Otoh, I'll never understand why some people think that just because one software works fine for them, that it works fine for everyone. Lol.

I had several movies that MBC refused to play. Using VLC was the easiest way to fix that issue. I play my files with a Roku and a second computer running Win 8.1 as well, so I was not going to re-encode my files for MBC and take a chance that it would mess up the other players.

I have since removed VLC as an external player, and now, using MBC with it's default player, I can't FF or RW!

You can skip ahead/back predifined amounts, a specific amount, to specific chapter points and direct play from a specific time point.  What else do you need?

I certainly don't suggest people convert to ISO - that format is more trouble than it is worth IMO.  Just install LAV and pretty much everything will play in the WMC internal player.

I've never had any of the issues which you just mentioned. With that being said, if I am using the same exact version of software as you and I don't have any problems then you shouldn't either. Install Lav codecs and Voila. All your playback problem solves. Have issue with fast forwarding and rewind, as suggested by ebr, skip. Don't want to skip well than use MCERemotePlus, it allows you to fast forward and rewind.

The difference between myself and most people is that I read the good and bad about a software before I dive in. Once I know what I am getting I make peace with it. Who didn't know using iso and mkv file in media center you loose fast forwarding and rewind capability? I am sure we all did.

Does "skip" skip to the next file? Or skip as in chapter stops (which most of my mkv's don't have).

I can't even click on the timeline to go forward or back!

Thanks for the tip about MCERemotePlus.

Skip fast forward 30 sec or whatever you set it to.

Have you tried xbmc or mbt? Far better than using wmc with an external player.

I personally use mediacontrol and control subs without any issues.

It is so simple. Make sure you install the correct version 32bit or 64bit and you need to be using ffdshow as the video decoder. Lav can be used as the splitter. I might do a video.

I sometimes use MBT, but I have a different issue with that: low audio volume.

If you are not using pass through audio to a receiver and your videos have 5.1 audio then you should enable mixing.

Here is a quick video. There are many other settings based on preference. If you have a very weak cpu you might want to use intel quicksync if possible in ffdshow. Make sure you install mediacontrol x64 if you have a 64bit system and ffdshow 64bit.

If you're talking about MBC, my problem is I can't skip at all. B4 I try any of the software add-on's suggested, I'd like to find out why I'm having this issue.

Where do you set the skip amount? In the configurator?

Go to media browser classic in windows media center. It has a config button. The interval setting is in there.

OK, so I checked out my settings last night. FF is set to 30. RW is set to 15.

I still can't ff or RW. Button presses are either ignored, or it just starts playing the file from the beginning (very frustrating when I'm half way through the show). Makes no difference whether I use my remote or mouse.

Windows media center doesn't support mkv natively. There isn't any fast forward and/or rewind. This setting is for skipping back and forth. I thought myself and ebr made that clear. If we didn't, I apologize for the both of us.
