Initial setup of Windows 8.1 app

Hi

 

I have been using Media Browser for some years and prefer it to others I have tried. I have the Server set up on a PC running Windows 7 Pro where I store my media files. I can run it fine from Windows 7 machines and watch films etc on my TV.

 

I have purchased and installed the 8.1 app and am falling at the first hurdle in setting it up. It asks for Hostname, is this the friendly name I have given the Media Browser Server, or the IP address or the name of the PC on the network? Nothing I enter seems ti find the Server.

 

Help as I would like to watch my media on my laptop.

The app tries to autodetect the server at initial start. If it can't find it the host will be left empty.

What you could try is to enter the following into your web browser (from the win8 machine)

http://youripgoeshere:8096/mediabrowser/

Just to make sure you are on the same network.

I am having the same issue.  I am running server on the same PC as the app.  I have tried the IP addr (which was detected initially), "localhost" and my DNS address but cannot connect. I get "host name not recognised" message. I have tried my local IP address in a browser (http://localhost:8096/mediabrowser/ and http://192.168.1.7:8096/mediabrowser/) and both connect OK.

Thanks for replies, link is not recognised, is there any server or network settings to change?, to confirm server and app are on different pc's

Is the device connected to the same network as the server, can you try to ping the server via commandline?

The Server is called MEDIA-PC and pings fine

 

C:\Users\Phil>ping 192.168.0.2

Pinging 192.168.0.2 with 32 bytes of data:

Ping statistics for 192.168.0.2:

I have a workgroup called HOME set up and can access the computer by using Remote Connection fine.

Ok. Can you have a look at the firewall on the server to verify that port 8096 is open for inbound traffic?

Hi

 

I am using Window Firewall and confirm 8096 and all media browser options are ticked for home and public access.

Just retried IP address and is now working, must have been something in the firewall. Can now enjoy movies on my laptop

Should using hostname use WANIP?

 

Test scenario 

Using server IP app communicates internally.

When you initially add the server you should use the local IP (or hostname if your netowork is configured correctly), the server will retrieve the External IP from the server and store it. From here on after, when the app launches and the app fails to connect to the local address it will failover to the External IP.
