Hi All

Not sure if this is in the right section but I am building a new Media Centre with all the 3D parts and a new 3D TV etc.

Can any-one tell me if I will be able to play my 3D movies directly through Media Browser or is there something special II need to do.

Thanks

Nick

I'm pretty sure you'll need to use an external player.  Other than that, you should be able to make it work.

Depending on what files you use to play back, You have several choices

Blu-ray ISO's or Blu-ray disc: You need a 3rd party program such as TMT or PowerDVD.

If you files are ripped to a Side-by-Side (SBS) or Top-Bottom (TtB) format  (MKV. MP4 or other), you can play direct, but your TV will not automatically see it as 3D so you will have to press the 3D button on the TV to select the right format. Alternatively, you can install TMT or PowerDVD as the external lpayer and your TV will automatically recognize the 3D format and if youi like you can watch the 3D movie in 2D aswell.

I highly recommend to install either, but I personally Like TMT because it has by far the best Media Center integration.

There is a other way to play the 3D ripped files (has to be a MP4 with AC3 or AAC sound) and that is through DLNA. You can use the windows explorer PLAY-TO function (right click on the file to play the file directly to the TV and your TV should recognize the 3D movie. You can do this from almost any computer connected to your network. You can also use Play-to from the media browser server and some of the apps (Media browser app for windows 8.1 supports it also)

A few more tips:

  • If you like to use the DLNA Play-to function rip your movies in MP4 with h.264 and AAC sound. Avoid MKV's if possible (Windows does not support Play-To for MKV). You can batch convert to mp4 using freeware such as Xmedia Recode. It allows to do a straight video copy and covert almost any sound to AAC. Typical 8 - 10 GB movie conversion (Audio only) takes 6 to 10 minutes (on a I7 pc)
  • On setting up our library, make sure you flag the directory that has the 3D movie in it to the correct format. (search the forum to find how to do that). This way the server and apps know how to handle the file (Launch the external player). You can also do it manually in the Metadata editor. There is a option to configure the movie as a 3D movie.
  • If you like to mix the 3D movies with the regular movies (not have a separate directory for 3D movies), but still like to possibility to show them all together, use the Metadata editor to manually add a "3D Movie" Genre to the Genres. This way, you can just select the "3D Movie" genre and have all your 3D movies into 1 place.

I like to add that the Samsung TV app also playback 3D movies directly from the Samsung app. It is still a little quirky, but it does work.

Sorry for the late reply, when I asked the question I was in process of building a new mothership PC and purchasing the 3D TV. The information you provided has really saved me a whole lot of headaches and got me set-up rather quickly.

I have purchased the TMT program and installed as the external player, checked and saved the 3D format manually in Metadata Manager. Initially when I launched my first 3D movie it did however I did have to change the setting on the TV. I am thinking that maybe at this stage it had not recognised the player and maybe played direct.

After this I put some more 3D movies into the folder, by now the server had done a restart. When I launched the next movie the process was notably different, there was a flash screen of Media Browser and then I was clearly in the TMT program. It seemed that the 3D movie was getting converted to 2D automatically and was not being recognised by the TV as 3D. I also didn't seem to have any remote control function.?

I would assume that I need to play with settings in the TMT Player to. I suppose it is difficult to comment without actually seeing what is happening or knowing the settings I have checked in TMT.

if there is any advice or something which I should check or any particular settings I should have I would appreciate your input.

Thanks for all the info and help.

Nick
